99 Expy, Driveshaft movement

All,

I have a single "Thudd or Thump" during acceleration that i can feel and hear it... There are threads on this and it is potentially the U'Joints. Several have suggested looking/feeling for loose joints.

I did this and could not check the u'joints, because the movement of the driveshaft moves back and forth, up and down "too much"... i have never check this before, but it moves 1/16 to 3/16 inch side/side and up/down.... The seal probably needs to be replaced, there is some dry fluid the looks like it leaked, hit the yolk and was thrown onto the underside perpendicular to the driveshaft axis...

Feels like the bearing is loose, and allows too much side to side motion...

Is this normal? I talked to a somewhat knowledgeable Autozone guy and he said that sounds normal...

Can the rear bearing/seal be replaced after removing the drive shaft ?

Is this only when accelerating from a complete stop?

A little side to side motion is normal at higher mileages. A recently rebuilt tranny (or transfer case) will not have the play.

The seal is external and can be replaced after the driveshaft is removed. The bearing is internal and requires disassembly of the tranny to replace it.

If you're having trouble checking the play in the u-joint itself, try using a large screwdriver and pry around at different angles to look for the play. Sometime a large set of channel-locks can be used too. For those you place half of the pliers on one yoke and the other half on the second yoke (90 degrees apart) and squeeze. Try this every 90 degrees around the drive shaft and look for play.
