Now that my build is nearing an end I need to think of the dreaded emissions test.

I am already getting new converters but i still need the other smog equipment.

first of all do the smog places check if you have that stupid charcoal canister?

and two is it possible to rebuild a smog pump
?

Yes it's possible to rebuild the smog pump but replacements aren't that expensive. Might be worth a look.
Yes, you'll probably have to trim the tops of the valves. With a non-adjustable valve train there's only just so much travel in the lifter. Unless you want to shim the pedestals or use shorter pushrods.
As for the check on the charcoal canister, it would depend on your jurisdiction and if they do a visual or just a sniffer test. Where you at? Someone in your area could let you know.

What year of truck do you have? I just took my truck in for the smog test, I had to swap on the carb from my wifes car though. The tech didn't seem to care that I didn't have cats or mufflers. I am pretty sure I am not supposed to have a smog pump though. It might be worth your time to take it somewhere and have it hooked to a machine so they can get it pass before you take it in. They used to do that at the smog stations here in Boise, but now everytime they hook you up, the test gets instantly sent to the Air Quality board, and they just tell you to pull a ton of money out of your (CENSORED) and get it fixed. Funny thing, I had 2 government employees tell me that on the same day. Makes me feel real good about paying taxes.

Do you know what part of Idaho you are moving to, some parts dont even require you to do a smog check......yet. Alot of the smog techs dont care whats under the hood as long as it passes the test. I don't think they expect you to have cats unless it is 81 or newer. This helps me, cuz my truck is the only vehicle I own that has an original sized engine. My wifes car went from a 2.3 to a 5.0, and my 67 stang went from a 289 to a 351. 1964 and older vehicles are exempt from smog checks, and I believe vehicles registered with a classic license plate, which I just applied for my stang. Car has to be 30 years or older for that privilege.

I guess since not every vehicle made in 79 came with cats, they just have a general standard you have to meet to pass. The test is based on model year, and nothing else. Not sure about the area your headed for, but I haven't heard anything bad about it.
