Well, over the weekend i installed new LED lights on my trailer. They worked fine.... I was driving today with my lights on ( it was raining really bad out) and drove about 45 miles, still ok, stopped, dropped off some cars from my trailer, started driving again, about 10 minutes into my drive i notice i do not have any lights on my trailer anymore. (I have a lot of running lights i can see on the side i can tell. However my brake and turn signals worked. I get to my 2nd stop, and turn on my flashers and they turned on, flashed for about 3 seconds then shut. Now the trailer had no lights at all. It was still connected ok, because the trailer brakes and controller were working fine. I picked up some more cars, and quickly checked under my hood, i found that fuse number 34 was blown the manual states trailer/stop/turn relay. I replaced it with a spare of the same AMP rating. Test them, they worked.... Drove off and they died again. So now i am driving in bad rain with NO lights, turn signals or brake lights at all. Get to my last stop. I checked under the hood and fuse 34 blew again. I then checked some fuse type replays? the square things that have a window over the top? Found that #42 trailer park lamp relay was blown. So i swapped it with the same 30 amp one from #44 which states trailer battery charge relay. And then again i installed another new #34 fuse for the 3rd time. Now all my lights worked fine, running lights, turn signals and brake lights. About 5 minutes later my turn signals and brake lights stopped. so i knew its not worth changing the fuse anymore, maybe there is a short on my trailer lights.... However i got back to my shop and the trailer running lights were still on. I then went to go get dinner, start the truck and i get a check engine light. It was code p2610 which read ECM/PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance. I figured maybe it had something to do with me swapping out the relays and i put a dead one in a slot that was working before. However the slot i put the dead one in was called trailer battery charge relay. However i did not think it would cause a check engine light. I get home and swap the relays back and put the dead one back into the trailer park lamp slot. Cleared the code, drove it, and it came right back on when i started the car after 2 key cycles. I cleared it, start it again, nothing, shut it, start it again, and it is back...
So my questions are these... 1. Why are my trailer lights not working? i am assuming a short? and i will check my wiring from when i installed my new lights. However it was so easy since all i used was quick connects.
2. Why do i have the CEL? do you think the fact that i have a blow relay at the moment would cause my CEL to come on for a trailer relay when non towing? I am going to buy a new relay tomorrow to find out, if not i am not sure what happened to the truck... forgetting the trailer for a minute, i now first want to figure out what happened to cause the CEL to come on.. I never seen this code before.
P2610 - Electronic Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Internal Engine Off Timer Performance
Description: Indicates an error in the internal PCM engine off timer processor.
Possible Causes: Battery cables loose or intermittent connections
Keep alive power (KAPWR) circuit to PCM concern
Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
Engine cooling system concerns
Sounds like it picked up an electrical glitch when the trailer wiring was shorting out. Fix the trailer wiring, clear the code and I doubt you will see it again.
