For the past couple of days my truck has been having issues cranking. When I turn her over she kinda stutters a bit and then cranks. '99 with 250,000 miles, new CPS. I have searched the board, but haven't found anything that sounds the same.
Looks like your truck has a case of what most call the romps. Usually this is an issue in colder weather. How long since your last oil change? I imagine your injector control pressure is fluctuating some causing the surging.
1,100 miles since my last oil change. Rotella T6 every 5,000 to 7,000 since I have owned the truck. I just replaced the ICP sensor about a month ago, the old one had some oil in the plug.
Mine did it all the time when it was under 45 degrees out. with two dead glow plugs. romped more severe than yours. Switched to syn t6 rotella and changed all 8 of my glowplugs and a stancor relay.. Never had it since. Only did it when it was cold.
Maybe a glow plug or two went south? CPS ? Doing it while warmed up has me subscribing.
So that is what the romps are.... Yep, does it when warm too. But nothing while driving, or at idle. Just start up.
There are different causes, being that you run T6 already and have changed ICP sensor, I personally would lean towards worn injectors bleeding off or bypassing high pressure oil until they are moving freely. Have you performed a buzz test? Or watched the oil discharge from the injectors with the VC's off.
I actually changed out all the glowplugs last year (OEM from RiffRaff), I also changed out the injector o-rings at the same time, and did the .50 cent mod. I also changed out my CPS with my spare International replacement. I haven't done a buzz test yet, I don't have an AE yet (on the list). I will see if I can have one done, checking for oil discharge will have to wait until the weekend.
Okay, a monkey wrench in the works... I decided to run a test just a few minutes ago. I go outside and crank her up without waiting for the glow plugs to warm up... and no romps!!?
BTW when I went to work this morning, and when I left this afternoon she romped..
Well I replaced the IPR with a rebuilt one my brother had lying around... Same issues. Haven't had a chance to get up with my uncle to do any tests yet.
Alan, you mentioned pulling the valve covers and watching for oil discharge, is this only at start up, or when the truck is running?

Both really, although at startup you might not notice and issue as easily as once they are running and you can examine the differences in the amount, if noticeable.
Alrighty, I got a chance to pull the drivers side VC. I remember the passenger being a pain in the **** so I will leave it for another day... If need be. The oil was discharging from the driver's side injectors all the same after start up, I couldn't see while cranking.. no help to be had.
As a test I unhooked the drivers side UVCH connector and turned the truck over.. started about the same. I did the same to the passenger side, and she wouldn't turn over. This was on a relatively cold motor.
