So, I'm tired of messing with my 94' F-350 CC 7.3L IDI. I can't figure out what's wrong with it, and neither can the mechanic I took it too. The tuning is fine, and the pump is at stock level. It's still averaging 7.5-7.9 MPG on a GOOD day, and if I try to haul anything.. forget about it. I hauled 3 bronze statues (350 pounds each) to my grandmothers house, and it went from the normal 7.5 to approximently 5 MPG. I was so mad.
Needless to say, It's going bye byes. My usual DD (94' Dodge Dokota - 18 city/23 highway) is getting pretty worn out. I had to haul a 9K load for my company, and she did it.. but she was huffing and puffing the entire way. Anyone know of a Diesel truck that gets semi-good gas mileage. I'm thinking about a 1st gen. Cummins.. or a newer PSD. I need the truck to be able to haul, and haul good.. so saying something like 'buy a prius' isn't gunna cut it.
Ryan,i think your best option would be to try a different mechanic.
these older diesels are best taken to those who've been around them back in the day or someone who's read up on them.
the first thing you should try,is removing the FSV and rigging up one tank only.this will eliminate the possibility of fuel returning to the incorrect tank.
you should also inspect the axles and brakes.jack the truck up one wheel at a time,to make sure all wheels spin freely.
there's no reason that truck can't pull in a good 15 mpg or better,if it's just got a factory pickup bed on it.
you also need to make sure the muffler isn't plugged right up solid.
start with big obvious things, cus even a detuned idi shouldn't be getting less than 10mpg without towing heavy.
that load you put on,the engine shouldn't have even felt that.i haul more than that in my 8k lb when empty truck, and just call those loads "running empty" in my fuel economy reports. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/g...vehicleid=1301
perhaps a good place to start with the engine would be a compression test.
If I get more than 500 pounds in her bed, it grunts and tugs real rough. I'm 6'4 281 pounds myself, so.. at around 800 pounds payload. My first thought was it was the transmission, but I'm pretty good w/ them.. so I looked, and ruled that out quick.
It's almost like it isn't getting ENOUGH fuel, to pull the truck.. let alone the loads, but that wouldn't explain the rolling coal at idle.. which would tell me it's getting TOO MUCH, ugh confusing. I'm just tired of watching my needle drop like a 747 jet.
Well the reason I didn't think anything of it at first is because I have a friend with a 1st gen cummins, and when he gets into it, it rolls smoke like a 1,000 acre forest fire, lol.. But this is just ridiculous.
I have an appointment at 4 PM today with Bozard ford, hopefully that'll tell me something.
that is because dodge cummings drivers are retards that think it is "cool" to shut down every intersection and road with massive clouds of black smoke spewing from the exhaust of there smoking turds.
