My Explorer w/ 4.6 V8 and 5 speed auto thumps when I accelerate off the start and then lift off the gas while still in 1st and tranny shifts into 2nd. It doesn't occur when I stay on the gas and move through the shifts. Is this normal? Does anyone have a clue on whats going on? I have under 8000 miles on it. It has done it since day one.
Do you have 4x4?
If you do then check the "yoke" at the driveshaft where it goes into the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft per ford directions and pull the assembly out of the transfer case assy, then add "teflon" grease to the yoke seal lip and to the inside splines of the yoke.
