I am back.... My 7.3 Excursion has been running fine for a few months now... All of the sudden last week it started stalling out on me...
The tin nut on the back of the IPR is tight and in its place.
I have replaced the CPS
Just changed the oil
Just changed the fuel filter
The ICP has been unplugged and it shows no improvement, and it was just replaced a few months back.
I am at a loss here...
It will start, idle very rough, blows white colored smoke for awhile, and then sometimes it will straighten out and run fine for a bit... then it starts stuttering, no matter how much I put my foot in the gas... then it will die.... Once it is dead, it will not restart for up to an hour... then it will start fine and drive for awhile before doing it all over again...
How warm is it there? Have you checked your GPR? The white smoke sounds like unburn fuel. Your harness may also be coming loose under one of the valve covers. Have you looked at Ohming out the pins on the outside of the valve covers?
the temp is in the 80's here.... I live on the east coast of central Florida. I am wondering if it could have anything to do with the fuel tank?? I have just at a 1/4 tank of gas... Wondering if perhaps something went bad in the fuel tank it could be causing said problems?
I had the covers off before and did the modification to prevent the UVCH from coming loose again, but I guess it could be a possibility?!?!
As for the GPR, no, I have not checked it.... Would it cause these types of problems? How does one go about testing it? There are codes coming up, that glo plug 2,4,6,&8 are bad?!?! The message had something to do with the glo plugs, but that has been that way for over a year, and have had no issues with it running perfectly till now?
Perhaps I should put my gas tank at a half a tank and see how it goes?>????
Yes the Service engine soon light is on... And when I had the codes run it comes back as something about glow plugs 2,4,6,8.... but the light has been on forever and this is the first time I have had this problem.... I am at my wits end?!?!?!?!?!?!
Your GPCM (Glow Plug Control Module) has gone bad. Its really easy to change. 2 electrical plugs and two 10mm nuts. Its right on top of the engine. I had the same problem a couple years ago. I ignored it but as time went by, the truck got harder and harder to start. Its not the cheapest thing in the world but at least its easy. The low fuel could potentially be an issue too, but your GPCM needs to be replaced.
Would the gpcm cause the shutting down and starving for fuel issue? Or at least thats what it feels like?
The GPCM is not lighting the glow plugs for the entire driver's side bank. So on cold starts, you aren't getting optimum combustion out of half your engine (if any combustion at all). That would cause a significant power loss until the engine is warmed up.
Additionally, you may have a clogged mixing chamber in the tank. Try filling it up and seeing what happens tomorrow.
But the GPCM is still bad and needs to be replaced.
Could be the duck bill thing on the fuel pickup fell off, that would cause it to run out of fuel at 1/4 tank. try adding more fuel to see if it runs better.
But the GPCM is still bad and needs to be replaced.
Or we've got a loose UVCH on the driver side. That will throw the same codes. I know the plugs on the GPCM are different colors. Can they be switched around? If the new codes (after clearing old ones) showed problems at 1,3,5 &7, that would say it's GPCM related. If they stayed on the even side, it would be time to pull the valve cover.
just fixed a x with the same problem, when cold the uvch would make good enough contact to run but when it warmed up it would quit making contact. codes were for 2,4,6,8 glow plugs. the harness had almost completely come un plugged
I had the same issue a number of years ago, i think it turned of to be the UVC wireing harness and my GPCM, I don't know if one problem cause another or not. Mine was hard to start but once it got started it ran fine.
I noticed last night on www.dieselsite.com that GPCM are about 100.00 bucks and he is in Fl so shipping should be quick.
One other thing, you shouldn't ignore your CEL! It's telling you it needs your help.
