hey guys, newbie here. ive looked all over this forum but havent found this specific topic. i just bought a 68 f100 with a 390 with an automatic and it needs a little work. it runs and drives but the guy i bought it from said the carb needed to be replaced and you have to find a "sweet spot" when you turn the key to start it. and it seems hes right, the carb is spitting gas and floods very easily. the key works, but as the seller said the "sweet spot" has to be found, you cant just turn the key all the way to crank it. the question i have is what needs to be fixed as far as the starting issue? and would you guys recommend staying with the 2 barrel or switching to a 4 barrel? thanks, any info would help.

Time to rebuilt the carb and get a new iginition switch
Once you get those problems fix might be a good time to change gas oil filters check spark plugs and wires also points rotor condenser power steering fluid. Check and replace as necessary. Could save you some headaches down the road or keep you from sitting on the side of it. Oh check batttery connections wires and grounds. There should a ground strap back behind the carb that goes from firerwall to motor. Good tune up and check all fluids.
speaking of tuning up the motor, i replaced the points and rotor, but when i did, the truck wouldnt crank. i put the old ones back on it and it started right up. im gonna put pertronix conversion on it when i replace the carb and ignition, maybe that will solve the issues.
When you get the carb situation resolved change the oil & filter. If you are dumping fuel there is a good probability you are filling the crankcase with fuel. It's cheap to do & good insurance.
Pertronix is great did it to mine not too long ago and upgraded the coil. I don't think it will resolve your issue but still a nice upgrade. Do you know what carb you have, motorcrafts are pretty simple to rebuilt and not expensive to do.
update: i rebuilt the carb but haven't done the ignition conversion. but the problem i have is when cranking it turns over but then speeds up. i put a new ignition switch in but no change. when i finally do get it running, it runs smooth but if i hit a bump it knocks off, and hard to start again. could it be trying to jump time or maybe a loose ground? thanks.
I'm not sure where everyone gets the misinformation about an engine "jumping time" That is something that cannot happen in the distributor unless you didn't tighten it down and if that was the case it would just advance the timing until it didn't run at all. Really worn timing chains might jump a cog and still run (barely), I've only seen that maybe 3-4 times in my 59 years. Do you have the small wire from the starter relay to the coil? All the grounds in place, clean and tight? Maybe try a starter draw test, compression test.
