I am having a hard time locating a mechanical knock coming from my truck. This is not an engine knock but rather a clunking noise when I come to a slightly abrupt stop and sometimes when I take off or am steering. I have recently replaced my upper and lower ball joints and all the u-joints as well. My truck has a 6" Fabtech Coil over lift and a 3" body lift. The truck is also rather squeaky when going over speed bumps. Any ideas or other suggestions I may have overlooked?
Well since I haven't had any luck with suggestions I am going to replace my sway bar end links and see if this helps. I did have one other question though. Is it recommended to grease the sway bar bushings? I have noticed there are grease able ones available I'm just wondering if the factory greases the oe parts and if they should be periodically cleaned and greased? They are not dry rotted or cracked in any way and I already have them off the vehicle.
Yeah exactly. Thanks for the reply. That was my guess too and a part I overlooked at first. I already removed them and I am going to replace them. I also removed the sway bar bushings to inspect for dirt and cracks and their good but I was wondering if I should grease them before putting it back together. I cleaned them up with a dry rag but don't want to do something that might make them squeaky.
Might want to take it for a test drive with the end links removed to see if the "knock" goes away.
(I was gonna suggest checking the slip joint in the driveshaft to see if it was dry, but now I'm not sure what year/cab/wheelbase you have - maybe you don't have a slip joint?)
Truck is a 2005 XLT 4X4 Supercrew. I replaced all my u joints but maybe I will re grease them and see if it helps. I replaced the worn out sway bar links but I still hear the clunk on take off and stopping. Only occasionally though so I think it might be coming from the drive shaft.
No it is stock but I did replace the u joints all around with grease able ones. I'm going to pull the drive shaft and re grease it real good. Ive been reading a lot about the knock coming from that. I'm still trying to figure out the squeak coming from the front end when going over speed bumps though. Very annoying and I already greased up the sway bar bushings and it is still there so Ill keep looking.
