So I have this 2000 5.4 X, and in 1st/2nd gear there is minimal power loss. It has a slight miss if that. But when it hits 3rd/drive, it can shudder and just seems like you're running out of gas or something. In 4th/OD, it's 10x worse yet. I would describe it as driving a manual transmission in 5th gear at 10 mph...the shudder and lack of power, etc.
Electronics/plugs, etc all checked as OK. Just changed the air filter, which was black as coal. Oh, and I just got the truck by the way...
Last thing was checked out was the transmission - the shop said they saw no problems with that as well. So I'm really confused. Engine coils, plugs all good. Transmission and stuff good. What's causing only 3rd and definitely 4th gear problems? The CarX place told me to try changing the fuel filter/pump but the fuel pressure was "adequate" at idle.
Any ideas? 145K miles
I have special needs kids and this X is perfect size for the wheelchairs. I reeeallly need to get it running right, and can't really afford if something's categorically going to be expensive
If the fuel pressure tests at the rail are good, I believe you have a weak cop, it cant fire the mix when the Egr system is activated, this will not throw a code, if the bucking stops when you downshift out of od, or wide open throttle or idle, this is when egr system is turned off by the pcm
Some food for thought
Sounds to me like a cop is about to go bad. I have replace 3 due to a bad design on the hood weather strip. When it rains cats and dogs, Im sure to start sputtering in a day or so. What I do now, is take out the #6 (cause thats the one that goes bad all the time) and it's usally wet. I dry it of and spray air down the tub. Some times that cleans it up and its fixed, other i have to replace the cop. So I guess i'm saying pull all your cops and see if any of them have water. That would be a great indicator. If not put it in gear hold the break and give it some gas till it throws a code. Sorry so long. Hope this helps.
Have you ever tried a water dispersant spray? I had a spitfire at one time that had issues and I tried LPS Water Dispersant spray on it. That was the last time I had issues with that problem.
I was told in person to disconnect the MAF and see if it runs worse. It did, but only at lower speeds (1st/2nd gear was weaker and wanted to die when idling). I'm getting really frustrated cuz "woods electric" claims the spark plugs and COP things were ok. Then CarX claimed the fuel system was ok. Then there's the rest of what I posted initially...
I think more specifically, it acts like it's just not getting enough fuel when it's at highway speed. It really did remind me of how my other car acted when I was a kid when the car ran out of gas. Learned really quickly that 440 miles on a car with a gauge that says 3/4 is probably wrong :P
So any more ideas? Again, new fuel filter, new air filter, disconnecting the MAF didn't "fix" the problem. It's really lacking in power, exaggeratedly so at higher speeds
You havent said if you have scanned it for codes.. I have two mod motors and they both have had a bad cop in the last week and ran just like yours is running, my vote is cops...
I wish I weren't so ignorant on how to test stuff! At woods electric, they said blah blah about codes, and did change a plug. Then gave it a clean bill of health. It ran great for about the first 5 miles home...then it started doing what it had. So wondering if I should bring it back or just a different shop.
You can take it to most any autoparts store and they will scan it for free, The scanner will tell you which cylinder you are getting the miss fire from. Have it scanned and post us the results and we will go from there.
