My '68 sounds like a tornado is going on when I'm on the freeway, does everyone elses sound that loud. I padded the floor all the way up to the rear window with sound proofing mat and the roof, patched all the empty holes I could find and used the matting in the trans tunnel cover, and sprayed rubberized undercoating in the doors and it's still so loud I can't hear the stereo. Would padding the hood help any?
Yup, I did that too. Changed all the weather stripping, window channels and vent widow seals. I think part of it might be those long mirrors for the doors. I know the cab is almost air tight because its hard for the doors to lock closed unless you open a window to release the air pressure when you swing the door closed.
If you have west coast style mirrors....thats your problem. Pushing a large panel like that through the wind will cause quite a stir. I had those car style mirrors on my '67 then switched to west coast....yup the noise level increased, but the ability to see behind me was worth the change.
Maybe those vents get messed up somehow cause I got 3 trucks and they all make alota wind noise, even the one with the nicest cab. The big western mirrors do not help, but looks and usage easily outweigh the noise they make. Check the fire wall gromets for the speedo cable and all that stuff, they cause some noise if they fall out or if somebody is too lazy to cram it back into the wall after they take a grommet out.(don't look at me the grommets got legs )
The first thing is the weather seal that goes around the door jamb, then other seals. But I thing you will find new weatherseals with cure most of the noise. I did this 14 years ago - when I first got mine, and then during rebuild, I actually had to drive it a few days without any and man did it howl. Then got new seals in, and
in addition to the other stuff done during rebuild, foil type insul here and there, a couple Dynamats, new firewall insualtor, it's almost as quiet as my 2000 Sable Wagon and my wifes 2000 Ranger truck.
Yup, I have those western style mirrors. I figured that was some of the noise. I noticed that it depends on which direction on the freeway I'm going as far as to how much noise it makes.
Had a lot of road noise in my '72 also. When redoing interior, I padded and lined headliner, double pad under new carpet, and carpeted back on cab where gas tank was up to the window. Also did the door seals. Next will be windows. Way better already!
Yep I did all that and I still hear the wind big time! I think it might be coming from the doors, maybe the wind is coming thru the drain holes in the bottom of the doors and then coming thru the interior panels.
Prob the reason you hear different noise levels depending on which way your driving on the freeway, is because of wind direction, one way you are with it and the other way you are against it. If you are doing 60 with a 20 mph head wind, it is like driving 80 mph. I think some noise comes into the 2 lower vents on my '72. There is a drain hole in there behind the vents, where the wind/noise prob comes thru too. I also sprayed undercoater on fender wells, under cab floor, etc. It all helps.
