Exclamation Her Spread

After driving for over an hour with the cruise on 65 her spread seemed kind of wide to me for a new oil cooler. New oil cooler & EGR delete few weeks ago. My old cooler was giving me a 9 or 10 spread. I flushed her guts 10K ago & been running a filter on it since that time. Data was taken on flat land & unloaded. What kind of spread are u guys seeing on a brand new cooler??

Hey Ed, I don't see a problem. Every one seems to be grabbing for the 3 to 4 degree brass ring spread. You are well into acceptable territory. I too run between 6 and 10 depending on ambient. Just consider this your reference running temp. for whatever the ambient is there and enjoy your ride. Some people put so much stress on them selves looking for a 1 or 2 degree deviation that they should sell the truck to save their health. Just kick back and enjoy her.

I had the same readings after changing mine. Never goes above 15* spread even when pulling heavy loads. Like69cj. said I wouldn't worry..

Thanks for the re insuring info Mike & Doug! Ambient was about 50F. I just remember reading so many 2-3 & 4-5's I was like WTF is going on here. I guess the old cooler wasn't plugged at all if I only gained 1-2 degrees with the new cooler. Again, thank you!

Mine has been 7-9* on average since my oil/EGR cooler change as well. I think everyone expects the sensors in the truck to be 100% accurate, and I don't believe that's the case. If your sensors had a margin of error of +/- 2* that could make up the difference between a 5* delta and 9* delta. There's probably other forces at work which could fudge the numbers by a degree or two as well. I'd be interested to know what the actual tolerances are on the sensors.

I installed a BPD EGR cooler, so that gives me some piece of mind if the number do start to creep. You deleted yours, so I'd imagine you're in better shape.

Just what I wanted to hear thanks. When I start her up cold the EOT & ECT are the same exact number usually.

On mine 60mph is 7*, 65mph is 8*, and 70mph is 9*. I thought it was a little much for a new cooler to, but apparently not. I worry about putting my trailer behind the truck and climbing the pass, will i see the dreaded 15* mark??????

The fifteen delta is a reference taken at 65 mph on flat grade with engine fully warmed up. Yes you will see higher spreads pulling a trailer up a hill. Below is reference listed in the tech folder by Bismic; If your temps exceed any of these than it will require backing out of the throttle and if it is really bad may require further investigation or repairs. But don't panic over a few degrees... Hope this helps answer your questions...

Mine has been running 7-9 degree spread for a long time. I've flushed, I've filtered and on and on..... The spread really never changes. If anything I would say it actually decreases when I tow heavy loads.

Keep in mind some aint taking the temps right

others may have a Bad Temp sensor thrown into the mix

when I drive at the same conditions as you Im a 6-8* spread and it favors 8* I only have 15K on this oil cooler

in the city I get an average of 2-4* spread
