Hey, just replaced my oxygen sensor on my 94 F350 460, after we were watching the scan data on it. It would just fall on its face. The sensor was all over and wasnt switching very fast. Plugged back into the computer after the new sensor was installed (old one was O.E. 105,000 miles) and the scanner is showing me that its going in & out of closed loop. Normal??? Coolant temp was at 180` had been running for 10-15 min at idle.
Sensor was moving faster than the original, but my concern is for the fuel mileage & performance to be optimal.... shouldnt this thing be running in Closed loop?
Not sure on the thermostat. I bought the truck with 102,000 on it. O.E. recommended temp is 192` right? Is there another one that works better on these engines?
This setup very seldom goes into closed loop except for a little at idle and going down hills. Most of the driving is done in open loop.
It is very hard to get one to go into closed loop, I have the same setup in an F53.
These motors should run closed loop more than just occasionally, it should be most of the time actually except when accelerating hard or under heavy load in higher gears. Now I can see it not getting there much in a cab-n-chassis with a big square box on the back or with a pickup that's haulin a big load, so maybe something else is affecting it. Are there any codes present?
As a generalization, this may be correct in many cases, however it is not correct in the ECU calibration used in the 460 engined 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and vans. If he has the Calibration Code of 4-98B-R00 he will NEVER enter Closed Loop above a manifold pressure of about 9"Hg or about 21 inches of vacuum.
In other words it will only go to closed loop at closed throttle.
No codes present at this time. I originally plugged into it to see if anything funky was going on after I got back from a trip pulling an 18" travel trailer (about 5000-6000 lbs) I notcied the truck wasnt pulling hard at 60-70 mph. On a mild hill it would back off, not in overdrive either. Speed would drop about 10 mph and would struggle to get back up to speed. 460 w4.10's I thought should do a little better.
