Just wondering where to look for all this oil covered, gunk on the top on my 6.9 van. I'm going to clean it best I can and replace IP, glow plugs and injectors. The motor has 129K but man what alot of gunk. Is this normal or should I look somewhere special. I can't believe its that dirty. I've owned it since new but never really got under there. Thank a head of time,
Diesels are always dirty, but there comes a point where it is a sign of some bad leaks. I would start by cleaning it four sure. Get some of the foamy engine degreaser. Soak the whole thing in it for an hour or so, spray it down a few times, and then pressure wash it all off. Thats what i did when i bought mine. That way you can see exactly where its leaking from. Then go from there. When theres lots of oily build up on the valve covers its usually the gaskets. If its fuel thats mixed in, obviously theres a fuel leak. First step is to clean it up.
Thats what I thought too. Its just so thick! Its everywhere, valve covers, injectors, can't hardly see the glow plugs, just the top. Never seen it that bad. I can see the #8 injector leaks, may be the return lines. Its a bear to start when it sets more then a day.
Not sure about that. My 93 was almost spotless until a dirty CDR started dripping. I just replaced it today, and I am hoping to return to a leak free truck. Most of the pictures of the engines on here don't show a lot of grime. Owning a truck this old is a kind of labor of love. Bonanza, man you bought it new and you are just noticing build up?!? Shame on you. First of all, be careful using any kind of degreaser and especially water on the engine. Sure you need to get the grime off, but water in the wrong places, and you just created your own hydrolock! bad news. Start by scraping off as much of the gunk as you can, then use an air blow gun to get as much as possible before resorting to water above the exhaust manifolds. At 129k you are due for pump and injectors. Make sure you get that top end cleaned up well before pulling the injectors and GP's or all that dirt is going straight into your cylinders! The hard starting after sitting sounds a lot like return lines, but could possibly be glow plugs or loose injector lines. How long does your WTS light stay on?

The labor of love part includes fixing all the leaks so the motor stays clean lol! Once i fixed my fuel leaks and did some gasket work my engine was spotless as far as oil/fuel/fluids went.
And you are right. DO BE CAREFUL with pressure washing the motor. I keep all electrical connections (okay, not all, but most) taped up with electrical tape. After i wash it, i use electrical connection cleaner/compressed air to blow them out. After i wash it i replace the electrical tape. I learned my lesson after i got water in some sensors that don't like water lol!
Theres nothing wrong with doing it, just be smart and careful about it.
Well first off I agree. But this truck was driven by guys that worked for me years ago then parked. Its a van so little harder to see. I know about sensors but I didn't think the 6.9L had many, not like the 7.3 powerstrokes. Anyway I thank you all for your help and I hope I'm up to doing this, I'm sure going to try.

Not good at posting pictures Chris. Never been able to do it. I just able to run this computor. Age thing I guess. I used heavy duty gunk and simple green. Work well. I mad my IP isn't going to be here till Monday. They promised Friday at the latest.
