I'm thinking about "de-smoging" my 97 F350 460. Has any one done this? I cant stand all the clutter under the hood. All I really use the truck for is stock class truck pulling so the emissions don't matter.
Some tips from people that have done this would be appreciated. What should stay, what I can get rid of etc.
Any one know what size belt to use? or the best way to figure it out if i remove the air pump?
There's nothing pretty about these motors with our without the smog equipment, but the whole air injection system can be deleted without causing any computer issues as long as the TAB/TAD solenoids remain electrically connected and all associated vacuum lines are removed or capped. If you want the heater controls to work normally don't remove the vacuum canisters and if you remove EGR you will get codes and a check engine light so you may want to consider leaving that alone.

The air injection system pumps air into the exhaust upstream of the oxygen sensor. Wouldn't the computer be calibrated to recognize this & call for a leaner fuel mixture if it wasn't there?
I don't know-I'm just asking........
On your 97, the TAB/TAD are behind your coil to the right of you EGR, from the front.
You will be able to remove all the vac lines associated with the TAB/TAD. They are black and pink in color. There is a white line and a green line that you will have to keep, as they are for the EGR. You will also need to keep the vacuum reservoir (VRESSER in your under hood decal). It is a black box on the pass fender with 4 vacuum lines, 2 red that 'T' to one, 1 white, and 1 black.
On my 95 F250 4x4 I removed the air pump and all the plumbing plus the cat. The only things i left on were the egr system and the ego sensors I installed duel exhaust. The truck runs great no codes .I have more power and seem to get a little better Mpg .

Hi Meangreen, I am looking at doing what you did to my 97 f350, she has a lot of miles on her and the system is failing on a regular bases... Can you give me a breakdown of what you did and what you capped off vs left intact... Id really appreciate it.
Hi bigassape in regards of my 95 f250 4x4 460 I removed the cat convertor the air pump plumbing ;left the air pump on 'kept all the vacuum canisters on all vacuum lines intact pulled the anti backfire valve pipe off going to the exhaust manifolds 'capped the holes off.I left the EGR system and Ego sensors intact
De Snogging a computer vehicle for street use is about the most ignorant thing a person can do. Besides being ILLEGAL you gain NOTHING, but problems.
They are designed to run the best in overall conditions as they are. ONLY if you change computer perimeters with either a laptop or a programer your wasting time.
I'm always wondering where all the engineers are? If you have ever been around racing, if you get to talking to guys you find out even in some levels of bracket racing guys driving or crew people you almost always find an engineer. I have no idea WHY.
