I do it b/c the look on a guys face when his new sports car or muscle car get outrun by what looks to be a work truck is absolutely epic. LOL I figure I don't have too much longer of diesels, then I'll move on to something else. Until then though, I'll keep upgrading the PSD.

I love the way this truck runs and drives and looks. It's the first diesel I owned that was really fun to drive and haul things. back when diesel was still cheaper then gas. My boss still said diesels were junk. That was an ignorant statement.

Of course I really liked our aerostar also. But I could fix that because I had a saw-zaw.

I bought a new SD in '04 and honest to goodness every time I saw a guy driving a nice looking OBS ( especially a crw cab ) I envied him! I kept that truck a little over three years, traded it in on my wife a new car and went back to the OBS trucks and stayed there.

Sometimes I honestly wonder. I have to get a garage on work on it because I hate my neighbors starring at me like I'm an idiot. Why don't you buy a new one, why don't you take it to a mechanic, on and on. Well, **** on them, as long as I can work on it, I love it! When I first got it, it would hardly pull my bug. Now it will pull my camper. I still want it better. I have an addictive type of personally though, LOL.

Quit pulling those 1000% grades and it'd probably pull anything you could ever think about. LOL

I do it for a few reasons. It sure aint because i have money to spend! I do it because, for one, the OBS trucks are SEXY. Secondly, 94-97 fords are the last true, American, Ford trucks out there that dont have flimsy plastic bumpers and more computers than NASA.

I love the reliability of the 7.3 and the power it puts down. My neighbors hate me since i started driving diesels. They hate the sound, he hate the smell, and they arent afraid to show it. **** them right? One even had the nerve to ask me to not wash or work on my truck in MY driveway because it looks bad to have it apart....

It may need some repairs, things wear out over 16 years and need to be replaced. But all the parts on that truck can be replaced, some twice, for cheaper than the price tag on a 2012 6.7 CC/LB F350 with all the options and goodies (60k+)

I love it because i learn new things every time i pop the hood, or log into FTE And if that aint enough, i just love driving a big, loud, smelly FORD diesel.

Rant=over

Because my father, grandfather, and uncles have all had one so it is in my blood to own and drive one. Because my psd gets better mpg and has more room for growth than a 460 engine. And if i wanted a 460 i would put a stroked out one at 521 ci in a 78 f250.

I certainly don't plan on going crazy with modifications to make my truck have enough power to be competitive at the drag strip. However, I can answer why I wanted a 7.3 Powerstroke instead of one of the newer engines. I owned a 2010 F250 with the 6.4 Powerstroke. It was a great truck. More power than I needed and it was smooth and seamless in its application. The only problem is that with all the emissions junk on there mandated by the EPA on all newer diesels, I averaged 13 miles per gallon, and that was driving it like an old man. Also, there was nothing that I could really do with the truck, and its engine aside from basic maintenance and chassis issues as the body had to be lifted off the frame for access to heads, or you needed a $10,000 computer to be able to fix any of the electronic gizmos.

So I traded in the F250 on a gas powered truck which is rated to tow the same amount as the diesel was in 2010, and I have been pleased with it. It only gets about 12.5 miles per gallon, but with the cheaper cost of gasoline and less maintenance I'm way ahead of the game. But I started to miss that diesel sound, so I started looking for an older diesel that I could purchase afford-ably, perform most of the work on it myself, got decent fuel economy and wasn't loaded with emissions equipment. I would have been happy with a 7.3 powered Super Duty, but they were pretty pricey. So I found my 1997 F350 OBS and I'm looking forward to making it the truck that I want it to be. I'll be able to do it for less than purchasing a Super Duty and have a terrific work truck that I'd be comfortable doing more than work and plowing with. I'll also get the relaxation and sense of satisfaction from turning the wrenches on it myself instead of being beholden to a professional. For me an OBS 7.3 powered truck just made sense.

Why? Well, I have had a nicer clean, shiny truck in the past ('99 F-150 SC Flareside, 4x4 Off Road, 5.4) and I traded it on this truck straight up. Some people may think I am crazy for making that trade, but I don't regret it in the least. At the time I made the trade I didn't know the truck would be my daily driver, but I did know that I wanted something with more room (bigger) and a larger payload. It's hard to beat a one ton Crew Cab Long Bed, and if I was going to have that size a truck I was not going to even consider a gasser. I don't tow heavy, in fact I don't tow more than probably a dozen times a year and at that it is usually in the 4-5,000 lb range, but I like knowing that this truck can pull whatever I can hook to it and haul pretty much whatever will fit in the bed. Add to that the fact that we can hitch the camper up, load the kids in the back seat and hit the road for a camping trip with one vehicle, and it really is the perfect vehicle for what we need. It hauls my firewood, gets me through the snow like a tank, and gets about the same or better mileage as a daily driver that I used to get with my Triton 5.4 powered half ton.

I don't have the money to buy an new truck and even if I did I don't think I would. Maybe I would buy another vehicle to use as a DD, but more than likely I would just sink some more money into this truck. I can make a payment into this truck when I have the money (mods and improvements), and skip it when I don't. Sure it's not new and shiny, but I can truly say that this one is "Built and not Bought". I don't want to drive something I can't work on myself and places like FTE keep me interested in making this truck into the beast that I envision it being some day. Anybody can drive a SD truck, but I want an OBS that works the way I want it to and looks like an OBS not a "Me too" Super Duty.

How's that for an answer?

There are two types of people in this world, the ones that buy new stuff, don't work on anything. They bring it in to have it fixed, or call someone to come fix it for them, they have no abilities in life and cant think for themselves.....

Then there are us on here, we fix our own stuff, know how to use our own brains, and actually get enjoyment out of solving a problem and knowing you can survive when the zombie apocalypse comes.......

That is why I drive old stuff, I can fix it myself.

Nothing like driving a brick that looks better than a majority of the trucks out there.

I tell everyone "all go and no show"
