I have a 2000 Excursion 7.3 with 272,000 miles on it. I know the 1999 models were famous for loud injectors. I had all 8 replaced with allied power re-manufactured injectors and the #8 has the long lead type installed. It sounds like I have a typical injector knock at idle but all the drive-ability problems are gone and the truck runs great. The shop I had to the work told me that the earlier trucks have noisier #8 injectors due to the head design. He said the fuel pressure is good thats just how it is. Is this true? the build date is 02/00 so its possible I have the noisy heads? Im new to diesels and the shop has been highly recommended and been in business for many years. Im just confused on the knock.
I never had a knock until one day on the way to work at a stop light, I was like what the heck is that racket. Everyone told me it was normal #8 knock and nature of the beast due to the design.I tried everything under the sun that i could afford to get rid of it. I wasn't going to live with that noise. So long story short and one lucky day -> https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...oring-pic.html Haven't had a knock since. Lucky, The cure all? Who knows, but it worked for me.
How many miles on these "new" injectors? It will take a little while to quite down. How long on your engine oil? I notice when it's close to an oil change things are a little more pronounced.
The heads are all the same in design from 99 to 2003. He's fool of it. It could be air but probably not if you've driven it a while. The Frx from Clay quited mine quite a bit. It seems mine comes and goes. I need to drop the tank and do the mods there. Next will be injectors for mine also.
The injectors themselves have about 200 miles on them since they were installed. The shop who did them said that the #8 is prone to making noise at times. I have Thr noise only at idle. The oil has about 500 miles on it. Could it be air working out of Thr hp oil system? Or just keep driving it and see if it quiets down will be my next thing. There is no misfire anymore and a friends e99 does The same thing with reman motorcraft injectors.
Keep driving it it will probably quiet down some, but consider the crossover and the intank mods. The issue with the "heads" is that they are not connected by fuel or oil to balance the demands of the injectors, the FRx and HPx (High Pressure Crossover) eliminate that design issue that maybe your mechanic is referring to, but as Chet said they are the same on all SD 7.3's.
Your welcome we LOVE giving everyone PMS(Powerstroke Modification Syndrome)
These are relatively cheap insurance. The intank mods, can be done differently as well. I do not use the large filter base and spin on filter, I use a Napa 3007 inline fuel filter, just cut into the suction line out of the tank.
