Are you just replacing head gaskets?? Are you turbo'd? If you are or plan on it, spend the money on studs, even if you have to borrow the money from somebody.
That being the case, an upper end kit will get you by.
If you have the engine out, and depending on mileage. Check if there is a groove worn where rear main seal rides. If so you might want to put a speedi-sleeve on the crank, cheap insurance. Prevents having to pull something to do it later.
I agree, its a major PITA to do in the truck... But its not impossible, and really not much more of a PITA than pulling the engine and doing them while its out. The only benefit to that is that you can clean everything up a lot better...
If you do it in the truck, do a search on doing studs in the truck. Others have but there is clearance issues on passenger rear. I did mine with engine out so can't really give full details. If you can't find I can help some.
