8 inch Lift Question

I'm putting the Fab-Tech 8 inch lift on my truck but don't know if I'll need to have my drive shaft legthened. It's on a 96 4.9L Mazda 5spd, reg cab Short Box 2x4. Would anyone here know if I would because I know guys with a 6inch lift you didn't need to, also if anyone has had to get one legthened how much should I expect to pay.

Thanks, Justin

8 inch Lift Question

yes, u will. id buy a new driveshaft. u will also need lenghtened brake lines, etc...8" is a lot, even for a 2wd and with a short box it will be considerably bouncier. axle wrap will also be a problem. do u plan on runnin ur truck as a pre-runner? or are u just trying to fit bigger tires. if u want bigger tires, less lift and cut part of the fender away is the ticket. but if ur making it a pre-runner u could get fiberglass panels..

8 inch Lift Question

before you lift the truck measure your drive line from center of u-joint to center of u-joint when it is sitting normaly, The shop that built my new drive line said that it would have helped to keep every thing normal if i had done that. also the axle wrap thing is very true you might look into ladderbars

8 inch Lift Question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 03:41 PM (EST)]best way to go is, less lift and cut the fenders out for latger tires. still have wheel hop, but wont be as bad and center of gravity wont be nearly as bad. it also helps with drive line and pinion angles and all that fun stuff.

8 inch Lift Question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 04:10 PM (EST)]Thanks guy's. I'm only running 35x12.5 tires for this lift...this is what Fab-Tech recommends but they say I'll have plenty of room for larger. I'm sticking with just 35 so I'll still have plenty of wheel travel for jumping/landing. This truck is a daily driver and on the freeway for 30 miles a day and it's a weekend warrior in the sand! There's no 4x4 that can keep up with me in the sand, love my I-beams!
This kit also come's with dual shock in the front so I should be ok with wheel hop there...it's just the back on the freeways I'm worried about.
As for the axle wrap I'm adding more leaf springs, I don't think I have to much to worry about with that since I don't do any rock crawling or hill climbing to put to much stress on them.
I'm having a front bumper created and I plan on getting fiberglass fenders for the front and a cowl hood, I'm not sure if I want my bed-side's fiberglass since I do use the bed frequently so it get's it's share of abuse.

Yes, even adding extra leafs you will still have axle wrap or wheel hop. I know I did with my 6" lift.

8 inch Lift Question

I can answer the ladder bar question. Ladder bars are long bars attached to the rear axle and to a point on the frame to prevent the axle from wraping or twisting. If you go to my photo album, I have a few good pics showing my ladder bars. They are the red ones in the back. They stopped all my axle wrap. Good luck.
Oh, I made mine, but there are many companies that make good ones. Later.... Hippie.
