Ok so my steering shaft broke And the steeering box is all messed up so we are going to redo the steering. I need to know which sagniaw steering box will work on a 1974 F250 4X4.
I saw a couple build threads where people switched to the saginaw style boxes, mostly on broncos, which have the 1/2 ton steering box on the outside of the frame rail, I think its 3 bolt, versus the 3/4 ton trucks like yours that have a 4 bolt box on the inside. Anyway on the builds I saw the saginaw box required a piece of plate welded in and drilled to the saginaw box.
the ones I remember were on other forums like bronco forum and maybe pirate, idk, its been a while. why do you want to switch to the saginaw box anyway?
My truck has a 2wd steering box and cant handle the 35" s. Want to get this thing so the bolts that hold the box on dont shear off again. To many probs with the half *** setup someone did before me
there are some threads on here about this. do a search on here. specifically crossover steering. a member 73f350 has done one with the saginaw 3 bolt i believe on his f250.
I think you could actually keep the 2wd box if you went with high steer. I'm not sure how lifted you are, but the 2wd boxes will interfere with the front axle and etc, thats why they are in a different location than the 4wd trucks. Is your truck a 2wd someone converted to 4?
1977 F250 4WD's from serial number Y20,001 (not High Boy's), 1978/79 F250 4WD's, 1979 F350 4WD's came with Ford/Saginaw integral P/S.
There are mutliple threads in this forum that have to do with swapping in this P/S system to High Boys.
1973/76 F250 4WD's, 1977 F250 4WD's before serial number Y20,001 (all High Boys), were only available with Power Assist P/S. The 4WD's manual steering gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with Power Assist.
I put the Dodge Ram 2wd saginaw in my '74 crew cab. The box came from my cummins donor truck & replaced a craptastic steering box replacement the PO had done where they put a 2wd box out of ones of these 70's Fords in there.
Ed (75F350) also has a 2wd saginaw. I think his is out of a chevy. If you search for saginaw on here you'll probably find pics of his.
Fordworth has a 4wd saginaw box on his highboy. He's got pics on here somewhere too.
The difference in the 2wd vs. 4wd saginaws are the mounting AND the way the box turns! For crossover steering on a solid axle you want a 2wd box.
Also the difference between the Chevy & Dodge boxes is the ratio of the gears in the box. I THINK the CHevy are 12:1 and Dodge 15:1 but I can't remember for sure as it has been a LOOOONG time since I read about it.
