what axles do I have?

86 f250 4x4. I snapped a half shaft last night after I just had the ujoints replaced. Didn't even get on it hard in some mud in the front yard and it shattered both sides on the driver side. It is an IFS, but the shafts are smaller than my 89's and have internal clips on the ujoints rather than the external. Also the rear, I had to take out the axle shafts to change the shoes and drums. It's full floating. Is this a D70?

The front could be 2 different axles, D44 HD or D50.

Both look the same, but the D44HD has 3.5" hubs, and the D50 has 4" hubs. Only visual way to tell them apart.

The rear axle will be the Sterling 10.25"

Another way of telling a Sterling from a Dana, the Dana's, all have the diff. fill plug in the cover, while all the Sterlings, have the fill plug facing the front, on the drivers side in the housing.

I think it's the 44. I had the ujoints replaced in the front and changed the brakes. After that, I took it out in the yard to test the 4x4. In 4 lo, I barely hit the throttle and snapped the inner and outer yolks and lost the ujoint. My 95 with the D50's shafts wouldn't fit in it. What other trucks would have a D44 HD that I can snag a half shaft from?

All F250's 80-97 regular cabs have the D44HD, but be careful, some regular cabs were ordered with D50's. All Super Cabs were D50.

I really need to find a D60 for this. It's a mud truck with 38s on it. I beat the hell out of it with bad joints in the front for two months. After I replaced them, I couldn't even sling mud in the front yard...

Would a D50 be better for now? I got one laying around here...

Isn't much difference in the both. If your a mudder, a nice upgrade would be the D60!

Only F350's have it though, from 1985 and on. 80-85 F350's had the TTB D50 for those who don't know.

86-91 D60 had King Pins, while 92+ had ball joints.

Why wouldn't the shafts fit in my 86 then? They were bigger around than the 86 ones. My 89, 94, and 96 all had the bigger shaft axle. All regular cab 4x4. I thought this made them the D50.

I'd love to have one. I just don't have the money for one right now. I have another IFS laying in the yard with the bigger shafts that I may use until then if I can't score a half shaft

Possible that all your 3 trucks have D50s? Did you measure the hubs?

I have not yet. I'm not by them. And the 86 is 20 miles away. By hubs you mean the lock outs?

Yes the lockout hub.

You can see the difference just by looking.

And a friends 1991 F250 Diesel, D50

Because you had to pull the axle shafts to do the brakes on the rear axle i would say its a Dana axle(probably a D60, all the 10.25s I have touched the drums came off like the semi floating diffs, no need to pull the axle.

Ah missed that part, yes only the Dana's had to remove the axle to get the drum off. I don't think that's the original axle on that truck if so. The Sterlings came out in 1986, unless your truck is a late '85 built 86 model.

As for the Danas, they also got slide off drums in late 86 or 87.

My motorhome has the D70 with slide off drums.

Good to know as well, I didn't know the Dana axles had that.
