I have recently done rebuild on my 302. Valve job, cam and lifters, timing chain, rings bearings, fuel pump, water pump, all the basics are new. The problem then was it would run rough and I couldn't get the carb adjusted and it was pretty old and crappy so I replaced it with a new 2100 (I believe is the model). Now it runs better and idles pretty good but it tends to load up and I have to rev it up to clean it out. It smokes black then cleans out and runs ok. If I run it for awhile then shut it down. It starts hard and smokes black until I rev it up and clean it out. I believe it is runnung way too rich but not sure how to fix it.
Are there any adjustments other than the mixture screws on the front? Does it sound like a float adjustment is needed or jets which need to be changed?
You should not need to re-jet the carb.
I think you should check the float adjustment though it sounds like that is the problem .
One other thing sometimes the "new" carb isnt that good of a rebuild if you simply cant get it to run correctly I would exchange it for another carb .
It has been my experience with rebuilt carbs from part stores , they are simply totally worn out and more times then not it takes 2 to 3 different carbs before you find one that actually works correctly .
I changed the jets from 53 to 48 and changed the accelerator pump arm location dowm 2 holes and the thing runs great. No more black smoke. Nice crips throttle response. No more bog outta the hole.

Thank you for the update- can you also post what size the carb is? On the side of the float bowl, behind the accelerator pump rod, there is a number inside a circle, something like 1.33. This number corresponds to a cfm rating.
