electrical issues

Hello, maybe someone out there can help me.

I have a 1978 F-250 I am restoring, I replace the selenoid for the starter and went to see if the truck would start it turned over, but did not start. When I removed the key the starter was still engaged, so i guessed maybe the ignition switch was bad, so I replaced that....still same issue.

Any ideas?

Welcome to FTE. Are you saying with the key OUT of the cylinder, the starter kept cranking? How did you end up shutting it off?

The next time this happens, remove the small wire from the 'S' post of the solenoid. If it keeps cranking, which I suspect will happen, the solenoid is sticking. This can be because the starter solenoid is bad (it's very common for them to come bad out of the box), or the starter is drawing too much current and arc-welding the solenoid shut.

The not starting could be a separate issue - let's solve the bigger problem first.

heck ya bro, when i first put the truck together after a frame off, first i had to grind my paint off the fenderwell to get good ground to the solenoid, i have ground strap ran to fender bolt to the negetive cable clamp to help out that and the voltage regulator too.

i went through five brand new solenoids before i got one that worked. the first to wouldnt throw and the third stuck on like yours is doing. i had to pull the cable off the battery. the forth one would sit and flutter like hell. fifth one has worked since 2007.

when you get one that works it seems to be a good one lol.

go ahead and replace the starter power cable, they tend to corrode down into the insulation and can cause the high power draw that might be welding the thing shut like fmc said.

also make sure the ground strap from the rear of the intake to the cab made it back on that caused me a headache too. if it doesnt have one add one from the throttle return spring bracket bolt and should be a stud in the center of the firewall where you can put it

I bought a starter solenoid from LMC for the yellow truck. The first day, it started fine. The next morning, the battery was dead. Ohmmeter showed no resistance between the hot post and ground.

Wasn't worth the postage to send it back, so it's still sitting on my barbecue.
