My biggest concerns with spares is rim rust. I just don't trust those rims, which get paper-thin with time.

Ain't that the truth! The spare rim of my F250 is so horribly rusted, I bet it wouldn't even fit on the studs! Tire does still hold air though. But that rim and tire will be replaced once the truck is restored, and back on the road.
