When I got out of work today, I went out to start the truck, pushed in the clutch and tried to put it into 1st. The shifter hit my knee. Then I tried to put it in reverse and I literally had my hand halfway across the passenger seat. I could get it into 2nd, 3rd and 4th. When I got home, I got it in reverse. Again, the shifter was pretty much on the passenger seat.
Not cotter sounds like the roller or guide pin (whatever it's called) or the notch that goes around the pin is really bad or the pin broke easiest way to check (which really isn't easy) pull your carpet back take off the cover plate and then take off the large cone shaped nut that holds the shifter to the trans when you pull it up the notch is on the left side of the ball the pin is on the left side of the hole that the shifter is in make sure it's there make sure the hole for the pin isn't all wobbled out same for the notch on the shifter
There is definitely a pin in there. I had the same problem with my T-19 a couple years ago. My pin had worked it's way out, all I did was put it back in.
I should probably keep the truck parked until I have a look, hopefully tonight.
At first, I thought I really screwed something up because I hauled over 9,000# this past Saturday. Then I realized it wouldn't have hosed the shifter. In a sick way, I wanted the trans to be shot so I could either install a 5-speed, or have the T19 rebuilt and install a GV.
I pulled the boot and the cover that's supposed to be screwed down on the top of the shift mechanism was completely off. So I pulled it and the cap under it out of the way which exposed a spring. Sure enough, there was a small pin, about 1/2" long facing the driver's side, that was so far out it wouldn't keep the shifter in-line with the housing/guide. I aligned the shifter with the housing/guide, pushed the pin in beyond the threads, put the cap back on top of the spring and screwed the cover down with channel locks. It's much quieter now and the shifter feels a lot tighter.
