Unhappy Speedo's Gone Wonky!!

Well, I was returning home from an idyllic trip to Parksville, BC and motoring express! 120K+ (72MPH) all of a sudden my Speedo gets a mind of its own and buries itself at 180KPH and stays there. I've always had a funny Speedo since I bought it the pre-owner had lubed it with axle grease that went stiff solid. The cable would stick leaving the speedo needle at 55-KPH when stopped, I'd have to manipulate the speedo cable until the needle would pop back down to zero. I removed all the gummed up grease from the cable and lubed it with super purple, that worked for a while until it dried out and with a re-application super purple it was ok... UNTIL... this. Now when I get it back to "Zero" and I accelerate the speedo jumps to 60/80/100 then pins itself at 180. I have no idea of how to troubleshoot this problem.
WHAT HAVE I DONE NOW???
JK

YOU MOST LIKLEY HAVE A STRIPPED GEAR EITHER IN YOUR GUAGE OR IN YOUR TRANNY. VERY EASY TO DO CONSIDERING THEY ARE PLASTIC GEARS. YOU CAN GET A USED SPEEDOMETER, CLEAN AND LUBE IT PROPERLY INSTALL IT THEN CHECK FOR PROBLEMS IF THEY PERSIST TRACE THE CABLE TO THE TRANNY AND REMOVE THE COVER PLATE NEXT TO IT AND YOU SHOULD SEE THE GEAR THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, TOOTH COUNT IS SPECIFIC. GOOD LUCK WITH IT.

Thanks B2SARDOG, I'll have to do the repair myself. Up here in the Great White North we have no Speedometer repair facilities and Ford doesn't make or stock the parts anymore. I'll have to pull one or two from a wrecker and start from scratch. I don't know how legal this is going to be, but some idea of how fast I'm going is better than none.
