could someone help me out with engine block colors?

ive got a 68 f100 custom cab with the 390. the motor its self is all oil caked and grimy. the only color i can see is the blue on the valve covers and the air filter. there blue but every is telling me there not the right color of blue.

i was wondering if anyone could tell me how i could clean up my block and also tell me the right color the motor should be so i can restore it to looking as much as possible like new.

thank you for your time:}

On the market there is Ford Blue, Old Ford Blue, and Ford Corporate Blue.

Read this post and take a look at pics in the thread: MustangForums.com - View Single Post - Correct 1968 Engine Blue color

I prefer the middle color (Old Ford Blue). The former is too light and the latter to dark.

1960/65 FoMoCo Passenger Car/Truck/Econoline engines were painted black. The valve covers were painted specific colors, because this is how FoMoCo ID'd the sizes of the engines for garages and body shops.

1966/79: All FoMoCo Passenger Car/Truck/Bronco/Econoline engines (including the valve covers) were painted Ford Corporate Blue: EP-2075-C 1 Qt. can / D2AZ-19500-AB 16 oz spray bomb = '64/72 Ford truck parts catalog.

FoMoCo offered engine "dress up" kits at the parts counter for FE's and 221/260/289/302's: Included chrome: air cleaner (or just the lid), valve covers, engine oil dipstick, oil cap, radiator cap.

No listing for any such engine color in 1964/72 & 1973/79 Ford truck parts catalogs // 1965/72 & 1973/79 Ford & L/M car parts catalogs.

Only Ford Corporate Blue is listed / 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog ~ Text-Paint Section-Page 1 (US), page 2 (Canada). See post 3 for the part numbers.

So how about the cleaning up part? I will be doing this soon, and I'm curious about what products and methods folks recommend.

Oh cleaning up a nasty dirty oily engine block and bay. 1. Find some old pants & T shirt or overalls that you may just throw away if your married and wife says no way are putting those in her washer. To start with first you'll want to get a scraper like a putty or utility knife. to get to the worse of the grease. Do not use any liquid cleaner yet while doing this or you'll make more of a nasty mess. Now use a wire brush the lager & small sizes to get in the hard places. You may want to use a old blue tarp below to catch the grease carp that falls to the ground for ez clean up if your over cement drive way or garage floor. Now that you at the point where you can't get any more grease off it's time to use a good degrease and a cleaning brush to go over the whole areas that you want to repaint or clean. Hose off with high psi water hose. Now some cities and states frown with any greasy water flowing in the gutters of city streets. Be careful or you may have the code enforcement visiting you with a nice fine to pay.. Now throw nasty dirty clothes away and your wife may let you sleep in the same bed that night..

ENGINE PULL

Since I have been spending time with how I am going to restore my 65 ECONOLINE, i was wondering if the only way to get the engine out of the truck is from the inside. I would think that you could lift up the truck on a lift and then put a support under the engine/transmission. Once everything is loose then you could just lift the truck on up and the running gear would be supported on a table or the like.
Is that not possible? I have seen pictures of people pulling engines out thru the inside and then thru the driver door. I happen to have a truck with a complete overhauled engine and transmission. All I want to do is paint and detail the engine and engine bay. Other then that I really dont have a reason to pull the engine out. Any ideas would be appreciated..

thanks!

It took me a period of time, but I just used the whatever foaming degreaser/engine cleaner was on sale at local parts stores and normal water pressure for a big portion of my clean-up. These all were used on a warm, not hot, engine.
Of course used a brush or two and a scraper in some places.
I did use my pressure washer a couple of times, as well, but you need to be careful with it.
I still have a ways to go, but at least it is less ugly. I used old Ford blue and found out there are two shades, light and dark. I preferred the dark. Both cans came from same supplier and had the same numbers on them.

Question along these lines - and I realize it may sound dumb, but I can't visualize the flow of fluids.

Do I need to drain anything (oil) before removing the valve covers?

They have a couple of spots of rust on them that I'd like to clean up. Plus, I want to refresh the blue paint and paint the "Power by Ford" lettering red.
