what is the difference in a steering box from 75 to a 76. looks like 76 & 77 have a different box from the older ones. i have a 74 with a wore out box and i guess i am looking for a education on what to replace it with.

The 73-75 boxes have a 5.3 turn lock to lock. The 76-77's have a 3.8 turn, lock to lock. I don't think there is a external difference between the two. The difference is the internals.

so if i found a reman box for a 76 i would be best to get it? i found both available at a rebuilder, same price, and i have a core. it will be a direct bolt on without any modifications?

It depends. A lot of parts stores show a number for a rebuilt Bronco steering box. But when you go to order, what they end up wanting is for you to send your box to be rebuilt. Many of them don't differentiate between the early and late boxes.
