The engine in my Galaxie (hey, it's almost as big as a truck!) has one light blue, & one dark blue valve cover. Rather than just pull em off & paint or powder coat em I thought I'd sound you lot out to discover how much I can expect to pay for another pair of covers. Condition isn't too imortant because I can bead blast em at work & then either paint em or send em out for powder coating.
Are all 352/390 valve covers the same shape? I know some say Ford, some say Thunderbird etc, not worried about that.
Depends on the year. All '58 - '64 352, 390 valve covers are shaped the same. Then the redesigned '65 - '67 covers are the same, finally the '68 - '76 covers are the same. Here's a pic of the chrome version used on the '68 - '69 CJ:
The Galaxie in question is a 100% original '64. Don't want to start modding it as once I start I'll never stop & before ya know it there woud be a 460 CobraJet sitting under the hood.....
I believe all FE heads will use the same valve covers.
Possible exceptions:
Big, modified valve train components (billet stands etc may require certain larger covers.
The special 427 MR and Tunnel Port heads may be slightly different, but if you had those your not worried about your valve covers :-) If I had to guess, even those use the same valve covers.
By the way, if you do get carried away. 86 the 460, you want an Aluminum 427, with 4.125" stroker crank (470 cubes). That's a good way to squander some $$ but still bolt up to all of your goodies :-)
Check out eBay for some decent valve covers at decent prices. They have everything from stock covers to Shelby knock offs. I've found doing a search for Ford FE, Ford 390, and Ford 428 will produce some very interesting results and usually you'll find what you are looking for.
