performance muffler without cats on a 302

i had a really good deal on performance mufflers at work and they were clearancing them out but after a few days the whole inventory was sold out.

i coulda had a xlerator 24" stainless steel polished muffler with lifetime warranty for $34.

well anyways, can anyone tell me a good muffler that isn't going to be too loud? 1989 bronco 302 without cats and a factory cross pipe from a 85 f150 without cats will be the main exhaust.

302 without cats. not looking for super loud stuff. i want a muffler that is going to be rock solid for many years

any suggestions?

No matter what if you dont have cats its going to be loud. I removed only one cat on mine with the 351, added a single in single out flowmaster 40 series and vented it before the axle and when your on the gas you can hear it from a street over...

The 40 series is one of the most aggressive flowmasters has I think they have some less aggressive mufflers. But like I said even without cats I think its still going to be loud.
Maybe a 50 series??

Sorry, but I beg to differ on that notion. The catalytic converter does NOTHING to alter auditory signature. Never did. Never will. If removing a catalytic converter increases auditory signature, how is that all those vehicles that NEVER had them are just as quiet as church mice?

On all the vehicles I have owned removing the cats greatly added noise.

ever since i bought the truck there hasn't been a muffler on it. it has always been cat back.

sounds great right now but one or both of the cats are not functioning correctly so i will take it off as an assembly and tap a new oxygen sensor in the 85 cross over pipe somehow (factory harness isn't long enough to put it where both pipes meet)

ok that sums up that question about a muffler choice. is there a muffler that is free flowing but quiet at the same time? i want it to sound just like this cat back i have now.

can someone list a few choices? don't want to spend any more then $40 and getting it on amazon.com is an added bonus because i have credit to use up

The factory cats do muffle the exhaust quite a bit. If you want a good mellow sounding performance muffler without cats look at Dynomax super turbo. Get a slightly larger case like 16 inch or so. You could also look at 20 inch case Magnaflow.

Catalytic converters are completely passive IF they are functioning properly. They have nothing in them to modulate tonal qualities of the air moving through them. Say what you want. They do nothing to change auditory signature.

I'm not sure why you think that they don't, but any cat will muffle the exhaust either a little or a lot depending on the convertor.

There have always been really quiet mufflers. That's why say a classic Cadillac is quiet.

i got a thrush turbo muffler on amazon.com for like $20.

i chose that one because it was not a straight through design like all the other mufflers i have been looking at. the size should fit nicely. the price was really good ( i can't even get a stock muffler in the bargain brand at my work for less then $28)

gonna clamp it on this weekend as well as weld an oxygen sensor port up high on the cross pipe to get that thing nice and toasty.

wish me luck guys and lets hope this thing sounds nice and not too loud.

just for kicks and giggles i am gonna make 2 videos, one with open manifolds and one with the whole new exhaust.
