I have an 07 F350 with 28000 miles, the headgaskets were done at 19000 miles and now there is a slight seep behind the starter and the tranny bell housing. Dealer replaced oil pan gaskets thinking that was it and it wasnt, sme oil leak but warranty ended. Anyway they are still willing to fix it, but the service tech said I would leave it if it was his. What should I do. I cleaned it up 3 weeks ago and its all down the bell housing again and when behind the starter. Do these get worse, should I fix it or will it be a mistake. The thought of lifting the cab and tearing the engine out makes me SICK. I had a 98 F150 4.6 gas that needed head gaskets 2x truck was nothing but a problem after.
Also If I do this what service, or things should I have done while the motor is out? Even if its something I have to pay for now to save later what should i do?
I can't imagine what it would cost to have a bedplate resealed out of warranty, but I'm sure it won't be cheap. My '06 has leaked just as you describe since very early in it's life but does not seem to have gotten any worse.(KNOCK ON WOOD) I never have to add any oil between changes and it doesn't drip or make a mess in the driveway so I vote to leave it alone.
Tell them to fix it then pay the extra money while its out to add studs. Mine was done at 27000 miles but I didn't do the studs. If I only knew then what I know now.
The headgaskets were already done. The dealer would not put the arp studs in at that time. They did say if they installed them they would have voided all warranty work. Should I really have them pull the heads again????
I was thinking now is a good time for the egr cleaning and maybe a new oil cooler to be safe....
I dont see any aftermarket oil coolers, should I have them install a new ford oil cooler and clean the egr cooler? I did find a sinister egr cooler all stainless. I thought I read somewhere that the 2007 6 liters already have an upgraded stainless steel egr cooler from the factory??? If so mine may only need a cleaning.
If it's running good and they will fix the bedplate under warranty, let them do it and leave well enough alone. Just my op. That way if theres any problems after reassembly you haven't muddied the waters.
The only way to do the bedplate right is to pull the motor. If there that far I would do studs.I wish I would have done mine then cause I know ill have to do them later.
The dealer doing the work said they need to lift the cab, pull the motor and flip it over. I guess if it could have been done in place i wouldnt have hesitated. Leaving the cab on is a little better........
Anyone have thoughts on oil cooler, egr cooler or if I shouldnt even fix it at all!
If they are going to do it under warranty, let them do it. I had mine done the week before my warranty expired and am glad I did. They also replaced the STC fitting, stand pipes, turbo drain tube, dummy plugs, and a few other things while they were in there, all under warranty. They pulled the motor out through the front and didn't have to lift the cab.
I wish I would have had them put studs in at the same time, but I was short on cash and needed the truck back in a week turn around for a trip I was taking.
Any issues after the repair? What stc fitting? How was the egr cooler or oil cooler? I hear those are big priblems on these. But its gonna be $700 in parts if I do both. If its a waste to do it then why bother
My oil cooler and EGR cooler were both in good shape, so I didn't replace them. You don't have to pull the motor to do those two, so I figured I could change them later if needed. The STC fitting is between the high and low pressure oil systems... not sure when they redesigned it, but mine was the older, more trouble prone design, so they switched it out.
I have had zero problems with the truck since the repair.... no leaks or anything else. You can't tell that the engine was removed; my dealer did an excellent job on everything. I may take it to them when it is time for studs, but I don't know if I'll be able to afford them.
