Strange sounds
I have a '97 F-150, 4.6l V-8, extended cab, long bed, E40D transmission (or is 40EOD) with an auxillary cooler, limited slip rear. I have noticed a stange rhythmic clunk, audible at about 5mph. It sounds like it is coming from under the rear of the truck. So far I have examined the undercarriage and found nothing loose or broken. Pulled the brake drums and found no loose hardware, broken springs, missing hold downs, etc. Universal joints on the prop shaft seem to be okay. Exhaust system seems okay, no missing hangers. I recently had the transmission serviced and the shop gave it a thumbs up. Could it be the differential? Should I have put it up on stands and run it in my driveway??

Can you tell if it sounds like it is at wheel speed or driveshaft speed or??
You could put it up on jack stands and run it and try to find the noise but be very careful around the rotating tires and driveshaft.

Just a thought- have you looked between the cab and box, or between the box and frame? I've seen stuff get lodged in those areas (a small branch getting lodged between the cab and box from a windstorm, for example) and cause noises like this as they shift around.
