C6 Rebuild
Yesterday while driving and waiting as always for it to shift into 3rd, I gave it some more gas and she sharted slipping in 2nd.
I think with all the leaks, shifting and now slippping...It's time for a rebuild.
It's not on it's last leg yet so got some time to gather some information and plan it. And it's not my DD so that helps.
I've never rebuilt an auto so some recommendation on a good kit and a good manual to follow would be appreciated.
Make sure you know the exact year of the trans (there was a change between '76 &'77).
They are actually pretty easy, compared to the AOD.
A couple of pointers
-Soak the frictions in a pan of trans fluid for at least one hour before installing
-Check all the return springs for the reverse piston, I had something like 5 or 6 broken on mine.
-There's some specialty tools involved, but it can be done without, except an inch-pound torque wrench.
-The pistons are a bear to get back in because of the shape of the seals, but I used some plastic from a 2 liter to help. Wrap around piston and seals will pass by.
-After the build, you can use Dextron3/Mercon fluid, much easier to find than Type F.
-Have lots of room and clean rags to lay parts out (in order of removal)
-Watch how thrust bearings come out and their position, some have a lip and can only go in one way.
-Cleanliness is very important
I was able to do my trans in just a couple of hours and it's been holding up great. Patience is a virtue when putting it back together.
I would recommend not using stock style clutches, they burn out fast with hard shifts. I know this one personally. Go with either Raybestos Blues or Kolene clutches. I have run both and have had good luck with both.
If you want to do a shift improver (very good idea if you are shifting harder), go with a Trans-Go kit. They are much better than the B&M kits. B&M only helps the upshift, where as the TransGo kits help both up and down shifting, among other things, like getting the correct pressures to certain areas where needed. I run only TransGo kits and absolutely love them.
On getting the seals in on the pistons, a feeler gauge actually works pretty good to tuck the seals in with. Be patient working them in. You may need to get a piston depressor, or fab one up, you will have trouble getting the pistons back in without one and get the snap rings in place. Not terrible hard to fab up.
I did not need any special tools so far, instead of using a clutch spring compressor, I used a couple C-clamps. Just becareful, when you get the snap ring off the retainer and you're loosening your clamps make sure they dont slip off or your springs will be all over your garage...
The manual is pretty straightforward with step by step directions and has some helpful tips for getting the front pump out and it gave me the idea of using the c-clamps.
here are a couple links that I found helpful.

there are also a couple dvd's online that you can buy for around $30 that show you how to rebuild it also.
I adjusted the intermediate band today and that helped the slipping for now. Hope I can get it along for a while.
I'm thinking I may try to find a C6 donor that I can start rebuilding...that way it's just an afternoon swap out when it's ready.
