Weld in drain plug?

The Dana 50 that I am installing in my 95 F350 apparently has to be removed and split in half to change the oil in the deferential. I was thinking that I might have a drain plug installed before installation. I was looking at weld in oil drain kits on ebay. Would this be somthing that I should do to the Dana 50? I have had a couple of people tell me to just put synthetic gear oil in it and it would never have to be changed. Is this synthetic gear oil that wounderfull?

Thanks,
Dave Roderick

There is a flat spot in the bottom of the ttb you can put a drain plug. Rodney(BlueMule) mentioned this a week or so ago, and next time I service mine I'm gonna put one in. I put synthetic in, but wouldn't leave it in there forever. Last time I used a syringe to suck it out and then put new in.

In the flat spot that Darin mentioned, I would drill and tap it for a plug, rather than use a weld in. It would be a lot easier to do and work just as well.

Thanks, that's great advice. I never thought of that.

If youre seriously going to tear the ttb that far down I'd get new pivot bushings and axle joints too. I would make sure the ball joints were absolutely perfect too. as well as drill n tap the bottom of the diff for a pipe plug as was mentioned above. its a huge job as I understand it.

The Dana 50 is still laying on the floor of the shop. I plan on taking advantage of it's accessibility to thoroughly go over it before I start the 4X4 conversion. So far, this whole project has been a huge job. I am having fun and learning a lot but, I am looking forward to the completion of this project.
Thanks,
Dave Roderick

I also have one sitting out, waiting for a transplant, conversion, if I don't sell the truck, I just may go ahead with it.
Never thought of installing a plug, was going to tip it over to empty it, and put new oil.
They sell pumps now that also make it easy for changes, but I guess, a plug would be handy.
Don't know if it's worth the effort, though.
Later down the road, I would have re-swapped it for a D60.
Yep, make sure it's nice and tight, while you have it out.
