I put on a new starter and this one wil start the truck fine but won't stop running like the old one was doing right before all of the smoke fell out of it. As you know, when the smoke falls out of an electric motor, they no longer work. It even runs with the clutch out. It only stops when I completely shut off the key and then it stops with a hard clunk. The last time I tried to start with the old starter [ original, 247,000 miles], it stuck and even ran with the key completely off. Although I did need to replace the old wore out starter I think I had more problems that have yet to figure out. The bendix does kick out [hard] when the truck starts but the starter motor continues running. I just had to drive it home 8 miles like that. Help please!
Would this be the one on the passenger side fender? My auto parts store tried to tell me it didn't have one but it looks just like the same thing that's been on every ford I've ever owned.
I only changed the starter. I guess that when the old starter started dragging it could have fried the solenoid. It had gotten to where it was turning really slow before it finally quit. The problem started AFTER the old starter started dragging.

I have a problem with my starter on my 1988 F250 7.3 diesel. It keeps turning over even with key out. I have to disconnect the battery I'm dumbfounded!! I replaced the starter relay, starter switch on the collum under the dash, key switch...
I always thought the starter RELAY was on the passenger fender and the starter SOLINODE was on the starter. If it kept running its the solinode on the starter that's bad. IDK?
The starter solinoid is fed from the relay on the fender. Disconnect it and see if the starter still wants to run. The starter gets its main power straight from the battery. Not through the relay like old ford gassers.
