97 Explorer sport EFI
I need your help before I waste a lot of money here. My used 97 explorer sport with EFI engine(165hp) with 91k on the odo tends to shut off on me whenever I floor it or come to a sudden stop while my A/C is on. Okay, I was told that its my PCV valve, that it needs changing. Also, I was told that its my compressor wheel...that I need to have the dealer inject some lubricate in. Now, I'm not sure what the hell to think here guys. I was just gonna head to the nearest dealer here and explain to them whati just told you guys. But hopefully I can get some valueble info that can help me out.
I tried to look for this question on this board(so you wouldn't have to answer over & over again) but I didnt find it.
Also, since you are getting at that magic age, check the spring belt tensioner on the left side of the engine. There is a little white plastic bushing betwen the arm and the part that mounts to the engine. If you see more plastic on one side than the other, the are is about to wear through. This will pop out, cause a lot of damage, and leave you stranded. Just had to rebuild mine on my '97. New part is about $45. Figured the factory design was so bad, I redesigned it instead of buying another one.

I just got an estimate & priced a compressor today...$389. @$89 an hour for labor(I know they're gonna take a t least 4 hrs on it), parts to recharge it, disposal fee, taxes. I know i'm already out of at least $600 easily. I crunk up, turned on my A/C and opened the hood. I think I may need a new compressor like you said because it was making a loud "bearings" sound. I could hear the bearings turning inside. I'm gonna try to relube it first and if that doesn't work...there goes my new tires savings.
