I bought a 95 f250 125k miles. Not long after I got it, it started kicking out of overdrive into 3rd and right back into overdrive again. It happens so fast the hole truck jerks but it never actually stays in 3rd. It down shifts for a nano second and its right back in overdrive. The truck shifts up and down every gear other wise. This problem happens when ever if feels like it. Bumps or not, warm or cold, in the gas or not. Sometimes it takes 10 miles sometimes 2 miles. My speedometer works great. ABS and cruise don't work but they haven't since I bought the truck. This confuses me please help. By the way my overdrive button on the shifter works perfectly.
So I got my codes off now. I got KERO 114 and 116 and Continuous codes 332 and 637. Not sure if the any other than 637 have anything to do with shifting. What should I do?
My top two guesses before even looking at the codes are the TPS or the MLPS.
Looking at the codes you did not perform the test properly. The truck wasn't warmed up. Did you cycle the O/D switch or goose the throttle at the right time?
Usually a TPS will leave a CM code so I would change the MLPS as your symptoms are a very common failure mode for this part.
Well its not the tps the engine runs perfectly at every rpm all day long in everygear and as for the mlps the most common symptoms is kicking out of gear into neutral and late or hard shifts and mine has non of those so I have already ruled them out. any other ideas? whats this TOT code im getting, where is it, and could it cause my issue?
your sure its not the torque converter unlocking/locking,rather than an actual downshift into 3rd?
next time after it does it,hit the OD cancel button to see if that feels exactly like what it's doing on it's own.
if you notice a difference, then what your feeling is the converter, and not a gear change.
if it's unlocking and locking back up as fast as your claiming, then this would explain why your not getting the converter slip code.
inspect the solenoid pack plug.your TOT code "could" be the cause of the issue.in which case, you'd need a new solenoid pack.
don't jump to any conclusions however, because there are many other things that could be causing the issue.test.test.test.then fix.

The TPS has little to actually do with engine running. It does however have a lot to do with transmission behavior.
The TOT code could indicate a temperature sensor that has gone bad, and shorted out. Try cleaning and reseating the electrical connection on the transmission and clear the EEC memory by disconnecting the battery.
Are you sure its downshifting into 3rd? If you quickly cycle the O/D cancel switch does it feel the same?
I'd say that it is more likely your torque converter clutch is slipping.
yes i have cycled the overdrive button when this happens and it does feel about the same as dropping to third gear. It really does jerk the truck hard when this happens. feels like the trans is about to drop out of the truck it jerks so hard. thanks for everyones help so far

Don't dismiss the advice I gave you so quickly.
The TPS does not affect how the engine runs one bit. You can completely disconnect it and the motor won't even notice. But you're right, it wouldn't be the MLPS. You might have a short somewhere in the O/D cancel switch circuit.
Okay I wont rule the TPS I will test it next time I have a day off. I was playing around with my truck a bit today though and I got a new code to appear and It makes me think I might be narrowing my problem to my solenoid pack. I got this code off
626 (O) Transmission Coast Clutch (CCS) Solenoid/circuit fault - Transmissions
What do you guys think of this, I am going to recheck my wires to the transmission but I saw nothing wrong before. Let me know what you think PLEASE!!!
You know I have owned fords all my life, I have had many of these e4od transmissions with absolutely no issues, and I am pretty mechanically inclined but I have never had so much trouble lately or been this frustrated with diagnosis. I have ready so many posts, you guys are always helpful. Thank GOD for the ford family.
