speed gauge issues
I have a 289 V8 out of a ford mustang 60's model on a C4 tranny...
The guy before just put a new speed cable on the tranny to the cluster...
I got under the truck yesterday and noticed there is fluid leaking from where the cable goes into the tranny...
I was going to pull the cable out to see what is going on there... What should I expect.... Fluid to pour???
Is there suppose to be a gear on the end of the cable?
I have tried two different clusters so I am sure its not the cluster at fault.
Thanks

Not only is there supposed to be a DRIVEN speedometer gear at the end of the cable, but a clip (C1DD-17292-A) used to retain it and a neoprene O-ring (87036-S94) as well.
If the O-ring has hardened up or is missing, expect seepage when the cable is attached to the trans. When you remove the cable, only a tiny bit of fluid will leak out.
The DRIVEN gear will be nylon, since the C4 came from a Mustang. If its badly worn or has teeth chipped off, the needle of the speedo will jump around, will not read correctly.
If there is no DRIVEN gear, the speedo obviously will not work.
The nylon DRIVEN gear, clip and the O-ring are available from Ford, but there are six different nylon DRIVEN gears (16-21 teeth).
To figure out which is correct, the rear axle ratio, tire size and trans type must be known.
Since the truck has a swapped in 289/C4 from a Mustang, to figure out which DRIVEN gear is correct will be based on a 1965/66 F100 w/a 240/300 I-6, 9" rear axle and a C4. What is your trucks rear axle ratio?
The tires used back then were bias ply's. The sizes of these tires are not the same as radials or P-Metric radials. So, if your truck has radials, the size will have to converted over to the original bias ply size.
The same 16 thru 21 tooth nylon DRIVEN gears and the clip have been used for over 40 years. The O-ring has been used with myriad different M/T's & A/T's from the 1950's thru today.
btw: Someone may chime in and say: Hey, what about the DRIVE gear on the output shaft? No mention has been made of it.
The C4 has the DRIVE gear made as part of its output shaft. I've never heard of...or seen one that was in bad enough condition, that the output shaft had to be replaced.
