88 5.0 AC question

I know some of the r-134a systems have a tendancy to leak down. will lack of freon pressure keep a compressor from turning on?

Yes, if a certain static threshold of pressure is not met, the pressure switch will be left open and the compressor wont kick on. What is your static pressure and at what temperature?

thanks haven't put gauges on it yet mainly just wondering I am not much of an ac guy

It's nothing to hard to learn or pick up. Get a cheap set of gauges, if you're not using them daily, a cheap set will do. Freon charge level is a key part of a/c function and performance.
