hmmm....92f150 2wd auto 109.000miles e4od tranny .heres the deal....i dont abuse my truck first of all but when some young punk comes up to me at a red light and wants to play race......today i took him up on it. ....knowing my demise of having a straight six and no chance in hell of beating him, i decided to go along with it.(hoping he would pull into a parking lot so i could chain up to him and pull him around and show him what tork is.lol anyway while punching the gas to the floor.....instead of frying tire like usual , there was this weird clicking, clanking sound comin from under the truck....like whatever makes the truck "go" was not connecting. if that makes sence.....sorry bout the spelling, beer has me tipsy and this issue has me puzzled.....after i lost the truck still drives fine, just wonder whats grinding or not working like it should......any imput would be appreciasted. ill try to answer any more questions when i can think clearer but thanks for the future replys. you guys are the best
I would start with the easy stuff and work into the more complex. First crawl under the truck and twist the drive shaft looking for any unusual movement in the U-joint. Then push up and down on the carrier bearing to check the condition of the rubber around it. Next for not alot of money I would drain the rear end and change the oil so you can look at all the bearings. All this can be done in a couple of hours and at a cost of 20 to 30 dollars. If it is the tranny and it has never been gone into you are looking at some expense. I just rebuilt my own with the help of my cousin in law and was out 900 dollars in parts with nothing major broken (mostly valve packs and a torque converter). I went with the option of modifying my existing pump to improve flow over replacing it with a 95 or newer pump. New pump alone was 400-700 dollars.
So did the truck move when you mashed the gas or just "click and clack?" Given that you drove the truck home without further issue you shouldn't have to worry too much about the u-joints, tho i would still check them next time you're under the truck. There are a number of sensors that have to be at 100% for the E4OD to work properly, is your check engine light on? Does the light work (check by looking to see if it lights when you first start the truck)?
