I am sure many of you remember asking a lot of questions trying to figure out the oil I will be using on my next oil change...has anyone used the 10w-30? What are the pros and cons of it?
You just can't do any towing with 10w30 cj4, only 15w40 Dino. You can use synthetic 5w40. The 10w30 doesn't provide the heat and viscosity protection and should only be used under 0 F.
In my last post, I asked about oils, since I have had the truck just always ran what the dealer puts in which I guess is 15-40 Motorcraft. Though about trying out some 5w 40 or the 10w 30.
I am not exactly sure what that means, but the one I have seen is Rotella and its for Diesel trucks!
CJ-4 is what replaced CI-4 which is the ASE spec the oil needs to meet/exceed for our engines. The Rotella your using more than likely is CJ-4 rated if they're got "diesel engine oil" plastered on the front label. To verify, you might have to look on the back label for the ASE circle; the spec (CI-4, CJ-4) should be right next to it.
As far as what it means...I'm going to assume it has to do with the additives, detergents and specs that allow the oil to stand up to the needs of these engines while not attacking bearings.

There are allot of folks on here that like 5W40 Rotella full synthetic. I like my truck, but enough to spend $25-$30 a gallon for it. Thus I run 15W40 synthetic-blend (JT8) produced by Mysthic. To each their own as long as the oil meets/exceeds the CJ-4 spec.
Some said on here "the injectors" like the 5w40 or 10w30 better...any opinons on that?
Does synthetic allow for longer oil change intervals? If so it could balance out the price. I am not a rich man, but I will do "what it takes" to get a good product for the truck.

I can tell you a 6.0L doesn't like 15W40 when it's -15F (got caught off guard)...but it will start. The injectors should like the 5W40 over the 10W40 because it's thinner at the cold weight. But how much it will effect cold starting...I have no data or experience on that.

I wouldn't do that. After 5k miles the oil is pretty much "sheared out" from the stresses of the HUEI system. On the old IDI engines you could go longer on the oil, especially full synthetic. But since the HUEI system uses the motor oil like a hydraulic oil to fire the injectors it will shear it. Oil sampling has confirmed that in guys that have tried the extended oil changes past that the oil was pretty much used up at 5k miles.
I have been using 10w-30 year around for the past several years without issue in my '07.
For reference there should be a UOA posted somewhere on here with my truck.
Is it CJ-4 rated? That's the most important question when it comes to oil, everything is just opinions.

You're looking for this symbol on the bottle. You need CI-4plus minimum, but most products now are CJ and are backward compatible. Same with CJ-4plus. Gene, you are in GA. Not very cold. I would skip the 10W-30 and either go with the 15W-40 or 5W-40. You want the high temp protection of the 40. The 5W or 15W is optional. The "W" means Winter.

Thats good advice there. Which do you use for your truck?

Timely question. I've been running Rotella T6 5W/40 for a couple-three years. The truck loves it. But late last year I had some injectors replaced and the shop refilled me with 15W/40. I ran it through the winter and the cold starts have been mostly clean, although not quite as good as with the 5W. So when I changed the oil a couple of weeks ago I used Rotella 15W/40, and will be adding some Archoil AR9100. My experiment is to see if I can get the cold starting benefits of 5W by using 15W with the Archoil. We'll see how that goes.
I will happily go back to the 5W/40 if the Archoil doesn't show value. And my recommendation to everyone would be the 5W/40, especially during the cold months.
