I have had that brake fault a couple of times. It makes the computer think the brakes are being used. Applying the brakes while in Cruise control disables the CC, so if the brake switch sends the signal to the ECU that the brakes are applied, it won't allow the CC to function.
This thread is kinda old but I would like to add that I've read in in a few other forums that the cruise control pin and hpfp pin in one of the connectors have been known to wiggle loose and touch one another, setting the P0088 code and causing cruise to not work. I'm having the same problem and hoping that is my issue because I'm out of warranty.
So I pulled my 10K trailer about 150 miles from home friday. Truck threw the P0088 code, While running the 210 towing tune, went into limp, and cc did indeed stop working.
Reset the code with the spartan Tuner, reloaded tune, drove the other half of the trip. Did throw the code again.
108K on the odometer.
If indeed it is the HPFP, What kind of $ am I looking to spend?
Just changed the Fuel filters 6k ago. Will change again when I get home.

There is/was a TSB on P0088 which said to flash to the latest PCM firmware which lossened the DTC threshold somewhat. Apparently there have been a number of vehicles where the parameters were right at the point of tripping the DTC while the HPFP didn't really have a problem.
If the P0088 comes back with the new firmware then it is time to replace the HPFP. I had a couple instances of P0088 under 75mph highway but minimal load conditions. I had the firmware updated and so far the issue has not come back in better than a year.
Im having this issue on my 2010 F-250 6.4L D.
It has been occured now few times (3-4) and first time when it came im not sure did it effect on CC.
After few occur times, i changed oil (Shell/CJ-4), golden coolant fluid, fuel-, oil- and air filters. Then i also started to use Millers Oils, 6204KB Diesel Power ECOMAX -fuel additive.
Thought i had it solved but now, weeks/over month later we were on a road trip and had a stopover after 180miles or so it went ok so far. But right after we had started driving it went into limp as u say and i noticed engine failure light. Also Cruise control didnt work.
End of the trip we went into that limp mode. We made it to destination and 3 days later when was time to move on, enginelight was still on but power had came back and CC worked.
Next day i had chance to read error code which gave P0088.
Looks like im having this update issue here?? Any thoughts?
My bet is the cruise did not work because of the code. If the code is still there then I'd have Ford look at it.
Before you do so make sure all your fluids are correct and that you have changed your fuel filters and drained the separator recently.
I'm having the same issue with mine I just bought it 2 days ago and once on the Interstate and it gets to running temperature the crude goes off and it goes into limp mode with code p0088 now the check engine light came on last light reading same code. If I had to guess the code puts it in limp mode which disables the cruise control. But who knows I'm not a gear head

That is exactly what is happening. You could check the wiring harness, behind the airbox.
Check those pins. There is also one other cause, but all of this is doubtful after all this time. That is the wiring harness leading to the fuel rails. but you have to take the valve covers off for that.
You can try a reflash of the pcm if it has not been completed. Check the tech folder for the TSB
