This just started a few days ago. It's a 96 F250, 5 spd, 5.8. Runs and drives great, no slippage or jumping. But retreat has gotten almost impossible to get. I had to shut it off, then get reverse a couple of times. 1st gear is hard to find at times, too. Also noticed while on a flat surface, with my foot all the way on the clutch and pushing the shifter handle to find 1st, the truck will inch forward slowly. No grinding, no noises, and once in gear moves fine. 2-3-4-5 are effortless. All fluids look good. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
perhaps at a stand still try putting it in 2nd with your foot off the brake and see if it crawls. Maybe see the same for reverse. You're hydraulic set up might have an issue. The other thing with the 5 speeds is that you have the "clear the gear" before you put it in reverse.
Sounds like your clutch is not fully releasing. That will cause this kind of symptom. How's the fluid in clutch master cylinder??
Like mentioned, many times you need to hit a gear to stop the cluster shaft before it will go into Reverse easily. Sounds like there is more issue then that.
Fluid in master looked good. I've had some older trucks where I had to bump 2 to get R, tried that too. I'll look it over good before the weekend, going to haul several more loads of caliche on Sat. What adjustments are possible, if needed? My last 2 manual trucks were a 67 and a 62. This new stuff has me a little buffalo-ed.
Thanks.
Sadly, the hydraulic system can't be adjusted like the mechanical clutch can be. My 89 had a 5 speed when I got it, and the 5 speed turned into junk and the 4 speed i put in got a mechanical clutch set up to remove headaches. The only option is to either go through or replace the master cylinder, slave cylinder, ect.
