I know no one can give me a definite answer but any ideas help. I have a 95 f150 4x4 with a straight six and a 5 speed manual. Recently i started getting this banging noise at 40mph. In the past few days its gotten alot worse. It starts off squeaking up till about 30 and at 40 i get a really bad knocking noise. It sounds as if its coming from the center of the truck. I think it may be something with the transfer case or it may be a u joint. When i tug on the rear drive shaft, it has a little play to it but nothing bad. Both ends of it do it. It sounds terrible and i think its going to go anytime i drive it now. Any ideas?
Make sure there is no stress on the driveline(out of gear/parking brake on/block wheels). That will allow the shaft to move very freely and is easier to detect a bad joint.
Look for rust dust around the joint area, usually a good telltale that it is dry and on its way out.
