I have a 79 F100 with an inline six. The engine turns and turns but it wont start and Im pretty sure its getting gas, so I'm thinking distributor....My questions are if there is a way to tell if it is a specific part on the distributor is bad and how to test it. I need tips also in putting a new distributor in so as not to screw things up worse. Thanks.
Don't go throwing parts at it, you'll just be wasting your money. Pull out one of your spark plugs and stick the top back into the plug boot. Ground the end of the plug to clean metal and have someone crank the motor over while looking at the plug gap. If you're not seeing a spark, you don't have spark.
More than likely, if you don't have a spark, it's not the distributor. Most likely, it's the ignition module, like psF250 said. They're problematic, to say the least.
Well I don't know about the ignition module...So it's mounted in the firewall if it's there? Yeah, the distributor looked fine and although I haven't checked for a spark yet, I am fairly sure there won't be one. Any way to test the ignition module? What other types of modules should I look for if the one you described is not there? Will have a look tomorrow. Thanks, you possibly have saved me a lot of time and swearing.
Yep. Mine looks just like the picture. The module plug with only two wires was disconnected. Not sure what they are for but it didnt help anything when I plugged it back up. I tried to check for spark, but I got a vicious backfire, so I held off a bit. Just got a new white hair.....
