I recently got my first truck, a 93 ranger with 70k miles, 4 cyl, 2WD automatic. I want to replace the Firestone 480's, 225 70 r14's as they are a bit worn. I am looking for a tire with good traction. I do mostly highway but some dirt/gravel backroads, wondering whether it's worth it to get an AT. Any suggestions welcome.
I have personally had wonderful experiences with the Tire Rack. Log on and read the reviews. Tires arrived in 3 days UPS and my mechanic installed and balanced them for $7. each. Last set I bought were Yokohama Avid Touring. The original Firestones went over 75,000 miles but the new ones are much smoother.
What you want for your truck is a set of Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires. They have a tread pattern that is suitable for snow and rain, they are quiet on dry pavement, and they are decent off road as well. Not to mention, they are a quality name brand tire and are not very expensive. I've even used them on my old Z71 pickup before, and I'm thinking about putting them on my currrent Ranger.
Like the previous post said, TireRack is fairly cheap. But remember that if you buy from them, you'll have to pay someone else to mount them and balance them for you, and you have to pay for shipping which isn't cheap on tires...so you might not save much money that way afterall. Just do a little research.
Goodyear wrangler RT/s are horrid tires.
They hydroplane excessively due to the continuous lug design(after the tread wears a bit the water cant escape).
They are also very expensive for what you get.
Goodyear rates their All-terrain AT/s as being AS quiet as the RT/S
so if you want goodyear you might want to check those out.
Personally Toyo open country AT is very cheap and seem decent.
My dad got some on his truck a couple monthes ago and they seem to be good tires.
If you goto tirerack or any of the opinion sites you will see the RT/s gets about a 5/10 rating on anything cept dry pavement.
I put a set of Michelin LTX M/S tires on my '85 Bronco. They were perhaps the best tires I have ever had on any vehicle I have owned. Not a very agressive tread pattern, but up to the task for most driving situations. They improved the ride quality dramatically over the BFG AT's that came off, plus they were even quieter. Sounds like our driving is about the same. Mostly on-road with a little dirt/gravel/muddy trail now and then. The LTX's worked every bit as well as the BFG's for what I got into off-road. Plus, they are exceptional for wet pavement traction.
Just thought I'd add one more tire to think about.

I agree with all of WX's points. I have the Wrangler RT/S tires and would recommend them to anyone. Decent in the snow (long winter this year around here) and they are excellent on the road. I've had people tell me that my Ranger rides better than their full-size sedan, and they weren't kidding with me.
I also considered purchasing my tires online but by the time I got done figuring the cost of shipping, mounting, aggravation, etc. it was a better option for me to buy them at a local tire shop and just let them do the spinning and mounting.

Perhaps the best tire I have run so far is the Yokohama Geolander AT+. I am currently running 33's on my truck, on 15" rims, and they have the best ride and traction of any tire I have ever used. Another tire I am considering purchasing for replacements when these are worn out are the Bridgestone Dueller AT's. I haven't ever used them, so I have no input. But the tread looks good on them, and from what I've read they are a decent tire.
These are both AT tires, but I'm just giving you some suggestions.
I went with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's on my 93 Ranger 2wd and would highly recommend them. The 27x8.50r14 is comparable with the factory 225r 14. The T/A is a much better tire with a stronger LT rated sidewall than the factory P rated tire. Mine hold up well with a camper on the truck.
They are just as quiet as the original firestone tires were and the handling improvements with the truck unloaded were great. Most of the miles I put on my truck are off-road or highway, never commuting to or from work. They are definitely worth the $$.
