Anybody ever installed or tried to put a ipod port(plug) in their stock stereo?Thought there was someone on ebay who did this a while back but now I cant find him.
The easiest thing is to get one of those cassettes that has the cord on it to plug into a portable CD player. It plugs into the headphone jack on the iPod and plays whatever comes out of the iPod.
Thats what I do and it works great!
I remember the guy on eBay he rebuilt and sold stock stereos. He sold them for over 300. I bought a pioneer 3200 bt from Crutchfield that has a USB, memory card and stereo input jack.
I drive a lot of different trucks, so I like a system that can easily go from truck to truck to car without any fuss. On ebay you can find brand new Harmon Kardon Drive+Play units for $10. Get one of those and one of the Harmon Kardon FM Transmitter Adapters (the $10 units on ebay usually include one of these) for each of your vehicles. Install the FM transmitter adapter into each vehicle (unplug your antenna, plug your antenna lead into the FM transmitter adapter, and then plug the FM transmitter adapter into your radio.
Now take the Drive+Play unit and build it into a box of some kind (I used a locking floppy disk drive box). So when I get into a truck I have to drive, I just throw the box in, plug the transmitter adapter into the box, set the FM radio to a preset FM frequency and away I go. It injects the FM signal from the Ipod/Drive+Play directly into your radio...no fading, no crosstalk, and no hassle. I can post pictures tomorrow of the unit in the box if you like...
Don't pay more than $10 for the Drive+Play...I bought a dozen of them for $60 about 5 years ago.
Something for everybody to think about: SD card inserts and stays there, while USB is a stuck-out stick. I always strongly recommend SD card instead of USB. Think of it this way: Does your camera, phone, book reader, or personal audio player have a USB stick poking out of it?
I just use the old cassette that camewith my XM radio- cancled that crap when they mered with sirius and the merge got ridof XM America. I run the wire through the dash so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I plug it into my phone and set it in the center console holder area.
Bill, if your stock stereo has a SAT button you can buy an adapter which plugs into the back of the stereo. That's what I use for the ipod and it works well.
I always just used one of the cassette tape adapters, till I went and replaced the headunit. I am blaring my music literally every second my truck is on, and a lot with the truck off...those adapters wear out after 6 months or so, but they're cheap.
IMO, the stock headunit isn't that great, and I was never really inclined to put a lot of effort into a permanent solution for an aux input that would involve me keeping the stock headunit. Again...just my .02
Thanks for all the input - I ordered one of the maxell cassette deals (temp solution) but I like the sound of the plug in back with the SAT buttton - Need to check that out- I dont blast the stereo like I did back in the 70,s so this one has all the power I need for now, till my hearing craps out.

if it is the stock tape deck, it will not have it. You will need to upgrade to the factory 6-disc changer that has DJ support. This was one of the first upgrades i did.
