rust killer question

after washing my truck today I noticed a spot of surface rust that is about the size of a playing card on the inner box side wall. This area had a recall back in '05 because there was a pad on the boxside that Ford found caused rust, the spot was repaired before I bought the truck, but I guess whoever fixed it didn't quite do a good enough job since it is starting to rust again. I went to my local auto parts store to get some supplies to fix it and they had some Permatex Rust Treatment. On the can it says it destroys rust on contact and prevents future rust, so I bought a can to try.

Has anyone used this stuff? I followed the instructions and it says that after 24hrs it will dry to a tough black polymer top coat that is an excellent protective primer.

Another question, the spot I fixed was in a pretty awkward spot and I had to spray the stuff on at an angle instead of head on like the can said so I'm not sure how well I got everything coated. Should I go over it with a regular primer before I paint it to be extra sure the bare metal is coated or should I just paint it without the extra primer coat? Also, I was planning on just using Rustoleom primer and paint, will this stuff work ok, or should I get a regular automotive paint?

After 7yrs on the road the spot was only light surface rust and sanded off easily so the original fix holded up ok. So if I could at least get it to hold up for another 4-5yrs without rusting through then I'll be in good shape. By then the truck will either be gone or will be regulated to work truck status an future rust won't be a big deal.

If the polymer coating gets 100% coverage and adheres evenly it will seal any moisture from reaching the metal surface until or if it is physically breached.

I would prime all surfaces well to see a uniform topcoat appearance.

Rustoleum is a good product and should adhere just fine but color matching the surrounding area will be hit or miss.

If you are looking for a protection scheme I think you are doing fine. Clean each surface appropriately before applying the next and you will be doing all you can.

I am an amateur and you can get more professional opinions here at FTE but I think you are doing it just fine.

thanks rob, I not worried about the color matching since the spot is on the inner box side and will never see the light of day. Actually, the only people that would see it is someone who is picky like me and crawls underneath the truck to look everything over.

I did do some searching last night and it seems like this product is kinda hit and miss for customer satisfaction. I'll just have to keep an eye on it and hope for the best.
