ive got a 16 tooth in it right now and it does absolutly nothing. it came out of another standard tranny though. i left the one that was in the new tranny on the truck at the jy and when i went back for it the truck was crushed. i know my speedo works because i can turn the gear by hand and watch it go.

Which style are you using, top or bottom? Not worried about color at this point.

To figure out what tooth gear you need:

Drive gear teeth x Axle Ratio x Tire Revolution per Mile divided by 1000

Drive gear is inside trans (can shine a light in while turning tailshaft and count)

Tire rev. per mile = 5280 divided by (Dia x 3.14)

I have no idea which one it's supposed to be. I put one like the first on in and it does nothing at all

I think you will need one like the bottom one pictured. The top one is for an auto.

If you figure out how many teeth you need, post it up and see if someone has an extra laying around.

How do I find out exactly what tranny I got. All I know is it's a 3 speed with 4th as od. And it doesn't have the shift linkage on the side of the tranny

You used the wrong speedometer gear for your application.

Automatic speedometer gears are left hand pitch. \\\\

Standard tranny and transfer case speedometer gears are right hand pitch. ////

Using a automatic speedometer gear on a manual tranny can damage the gears as they will not mesh and strip out.

Check the internal drive gear for damage that the speedometer gear is supposed to mesh to, or if it's missing.

Being a 3+o/d trans you probably have the SROD like I do. The gear on top is the right gear. If the drive gear is for the "right" pitch then it should show damage on the driven gear. Did you use the clip to hold the gear on?

If it does nothing when you installed it either
1, you don't have it in all the way
2, it isn't on the end of the cable all the way
3, your drive gear inside the transmission is bad
4, the cable is bad.
5, the speedometer itself is bad

Easy way to check the last two is with a drill hooked to the end of the cable.

You don't even need to use a drill, just twirl it with your fingers and see if the dash gauge reacts.

I know my speedometer is good i spun the gear. The clip was on, it's on the cable all the way or the clip wouldn't go on right, I'm not sure bout the gear on the inside. The speedometer gear goes in the tranny on the driverside on mine
