Emergency brake handle spring question

My e-brake doesn't catch and hold so I removed it, and I see that this spring is loose. The spring appears to be intact but I'm not positive.

1) Does this spring still look good or do I need to replace it?

2) How does the spring properly attach?

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks! I think I got that.

Now, for a follow up question: This is where the cable goes through the firewall. I think there's supposed to be a clip or something to hold it... Is this correct? What am I missing here?

Thanks again.

Yes there is a clip that holds the cable in place...Dennis carpenter and several other suppliers have them

The whole enchilada is shown here in an exploded view: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 26, page 9 (1961/63 uses the same setup, same parts).

The brake handle's shaft (Ford: lever) has notches. At the bottom of the park brake control outer shroud, just in front of the mounting bracket is a shouldered pin (top-center).

When you pull the handle straight out, the pin drops into one of the notches, retains it in place (catches it).

When you turn the handle to release it, this action detaches the pin from the notch. If the pin is missing or has snapped, when you pull the handle out, it will not catch.

The Curli-Q spring that attaches to the parking pawl is notorious for either snapping or losing tensile strength.
